Show rffwnfr rnftPtutfiairmgir Helping your child school year wrap up 1990-9- 1 Succeed in school by Lily Eskelsen, president Utah Education Association Teamwork is an essential life skill. Even the most independent maverick among us needs to know how to function within a group. As a culture, we are obsessed with signing up our children for teams. We want our children involved in soccer games and Little League and volley ball and drill teams, hoping they will develop a talent for teamwork. But the most important team our children should have to learn to work with is the one they wake up with everyday. The family is a team and parents are the coaches. Its up to Mom and Dad to set the stage for the cooperation thats needed for a successful Team. From their earliest year, children need to be responsible for family chores beyond their own rooms and their own messes (which for my children are usually one and the same.) Pulling weeds, painting the garage, washing the kitchen floor are opportunities for children and parents to work together for the good of the team. It doesnt matter if Mom works solely in the home. ' other family members. Each member should be given the chance to know the importance of his or her contribution to a successful team. I suppose it is only fair to warm parents that my experience with teenagers is that they will sincerely tell you that they really dont want or need this opportunity, thank you very much! Coaches, dont be confused. Rookies dont always understand the strategy. Mowing the lawn, setting the table, tending younger children, running to the store for milk to a successful family team, these positions are as important as quarterback, pitcher or goalie. Few young children are going to thank their parents for making them follow through on family responsibilities. Few adult children are going to forget the basic game plan when its time to coach their own tpamc - Kim Fillmore NSHS full-tuiti- on band and Chorus will perform their last numbers of this school year. Come out and enjoy their performance in the North Sevier High School Auditorium. Many clubs at North Sevier are having their closing socials this month. The F groups have decided to go to Lagoon. Have fun at the close of another great year at NSHS. student has scholarship Brian Lane Gladwell, a North Sevier High senior, has earned a four year, Presidential full-tuiti- Scholarship to the University of Utah, the highest award given to entering freshmen from Utah. Gladwell, son of Craig and Karen Gladwell, Salina, is a finalist for the National MErit and U.S. Presidential scholarships, and was a Sterling Scholar Nominee. He is 4-ye- ar the Elks Most Valuable Student, 3A debate champion and an outstanding jazz soloist. The Presidential Scholarship pays' full tuition for four1' years, provided the student maintains a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. The scholarship does not include computer use or special fees, but pays for $750 in books each year. God Bless The USA slogan had to be changed: included God" A neighboring school districts junior high had sponsored a contest for students to promote patriotism. The contest included designing a poster. The winner would have his poster made into a banner to be placed in the school. The PTA selected a winning poster with the slogan God Bless the USA, however they were told by a school official that the slogan could not be used because it contains the word God. The winner was asked to change his slogan -and did. The new slogan read Were proud to be Americans. The school official requiring the change had just completed a law class and was certain that such a banner would be a violation of civil rights. School Districts throughout the state are warned about prayer Evidently every school district in the state has received a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) warning not to have prayer at graduation or face legal action. Governor Norman Bangerter supports the decision of each school district whether to have prayer or not, but the state attorney general has advised districts not to have prayer. The state is now supporting some districts which are being challenged in court by the ACLU, on prayer cases, but it is stressed that from now on, any additional cases will not be receiving state funding for legal actions. Tough absentee reform pays off at Emery High A tough new absentee reform in Carbon County has made a difference, according to Emery High School. A study by the schools administration had followed 56 students from the 1989-9- 0 school year who had 1 0 or more absences in of their first three terms.
