Among business discussed: Mayor Nyals Andreason presented the name of Betty Mason Cowley and recommended that she . be appointed Salina City Recorder. Salary will be $5.50 per hour for three months probation period and then will be raised to $6 per hour. Benefits will begin at employment date. The Council approved the recommendation. Claudia Nielson and Jeff Brewer of the North Sevier Economic American Legion Convention May 18, 7 p.m. The American Legion District 6 Convention will be held at the Salina Legion Hall, Saturday, May 18, 7 p.m. All members of the district are urged to attend. Dinner will be served, $6 per plate. Redmond sets Town Cleanup May 18, 9 a.m.--- All Redmond residents are urged to bring their shovels, rakes, etc., Saturday, May 18, at 9 a.m. to begin the annual Redmond Town Cleanup. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Bake Sale at 10 a.m. NSHS Track Team sets Meet for 7th 8th, 9th graders The North Sevier High School Track Team will sponsor a Junior high Track Meet for all 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students on May 22, 1991 at 3 p.m. at the High School Track. Development Committee showed a short video on southern Utah and areas that needed to be cleaned up. Then noted that the week of May 8 has been declared City Cleanup Week. If citizens will have their yard debris on the curb by noon on Friday, May 17th, the city crew will pick it up and haul it away. They asked the city to purchase and serve hotdogs on Friday the 17th at the city park. The city agreed to purchase coke and serve the hot dogs. The Firemens Auxiliary was given permission to hold a street dance on June 15th. Ray Blackham stated he needs a set of books on building codes. Mayor Andreason recommended that it be budgeted next year. Meanwhile, Roger will meet with Blackham and City Attorney Mike Jorgensen to see just which books are necessary and bring a recommendation to the next meeting. Mel Briggs presented aproposal for City Health Insurance. A meeting will be held for Employees to meet with Council members to review the insurance plan. 13-1- Chris Williams asked permission to put a septic tank in when he builds a home in the southwester part of town near his business. City Supervisor Scott Holt said that because of the distance, it is not feasible to put him on the sewer. The council gave their permission. He was also told that his lot must be a minimum of one acre in size. Supervisor Holt told the Council that the city could trade the current Backhoe for a new one fof $800. The motion was approved to go ahead with the trade. Receiving a sewer cleaning truck was discussed and the motion was made by resolution approving the form of the equipment lease agreement with Utah Independent Bank, Finding that it is in the best interests of the city to enter into said agreement, and authorizing the execution and delivery thereof. All voted in favor of the resolution. Dwain Burr from the Zoning Committee stated that Lyman Forsyth would like to rezone property on Sandy Lane from R2 to R3. He would also like a variance on property footage. There are still several problems before a public hearing Cleanup Week in Salina Let's Make Salina Shine The Salina City Cleanup project is underway this week. And this is a great opportunity for residents to Clean away weeds and olherdebris from their yards. Pickup will include yard debris only - and you are asked to have the litter on the curb by Friday noon. Litter will be picked up Friday afternoon by city crews. To help celebrate the 'Spring Cleaning of Salina', the City would like to invite residents to attend a picnic at the park - on Friday, May 17, beginning at 6 p.m. All residents are urged to attend. Scout groups will be available to help those who may need assitance in cleaning up their yards. Everyone is pitching in on the project. UDOT will be sweeping and washing the city's Main street. The Senior Citizens will choose three residences that have had the best 'facelift', the Economic Development Committee will choose four businesses, and the City will choose four residences that set a good example for everyone to follow. The Cleanup program is sponsored by the North Sevier Economic Development Committee, Salina Chamber of Commerce, Salina City, and the Senior Citizens Organization. Volunteers are still needed for other "Spruce up Salina' projects, including the planting of the large planters that make our business area look so nice. Anyone with some time to donate, would be appreciated. Contact Jeff Brewer, Claudia Nielsen, or the city office. Let's make Salina shine! All students in this age bracket are welcome to participate. Cost will be 50 cents per runner. North Sevier can be held. Burr also noted that Ralph Jones has proper footage for the duplex he would like to build and recommended that a public hearing be held. The council approved the recommendation. Councilman Roger Nielsen , thanked Mr. Burr and his committee members Chad Beach and Dave Willdcn for all their efforts in behalf of Salina City. Tax rate was discussed and the motion was made to have the same tax rate as last year which will generate more revenue and to proceed to hold a public hearing and publish the necessary notices. Approved. Mayor Andreason noted that Earl Steiger would like to change his business to a Private Club. After discussion, the council agreed to permit him to apply for a license from the State to operate as a Private Club. Donations to individuals was discussed. The Council decided not to donate to individuals . It was suggested to donate as individual citizens. Two business licenses were approved; 8 buildings permits were approved. Councilwoman Karren Glover reported the new library hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday Noon to 2 p.m. Closed on , Tuesdays. Councilman Kim Robinson the only bid received on reported the pool was from Perma Bond. The council approved their bid if they will accept payment of $8,000 now and the balance of $15,352 after July 1, 1991. Chief Gordon Kiesel recommended that the yield sign at 2nd East and 2nd South be taken down and the intersection be left open. The recommendation was approved. The Salina City Landfill contract was renewed fa- - another month. The next meeting of the Salina City Council will be held Monday, May 20, beginning at 7 p.m. Anyone with questions or concerns for the Council is welcome to attend. Last weeks rains were Meet New City Recorder A new City Recorder was approved by the Council in their May 6, 1991 meeting. Nineteen applications had been received to fill the vacancy that will be created when Gayle Nielsen, who has served in that position for 9 years, retires at the end of May. The field was narrowed down to five for interviewing. The assisting committee was unanimous in their recommendation of the person chosen. The Council was also unanimous in their approval of Mrs. Betty Mason Cowley as the new Salina City Recorder. Betty was bom in Aurora, and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hil-mMason. She is a 1980 graduate of North Sevier High School, where she participated in many activities ar sold beer to a minor IN COUNTY CONTROLLED CaptainBud Larsen Sevier County Sheriffs Office On May 4, 1991, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Sheriffs Deputies Dwight Jenkins, Delbert Lloyd and Steve Mickelsen, conducted several controlled beer buys at Convenience stores throughout the Sevier county area. A minor was used to buy or attempt to buy beer. Out of 20 locations approached, 8 locations sold beer to the minor subject with and Photo Deadlines -- 7. Utah Technical College in 1982 in secretarial training. After completing this education she served for six years as secretary for the District Office of Utah State University Extension Service, Richfield. For the past year she has been office manager of the SUSC Support Services in Cedar City while her husband has been completing his degree. Betty has lived and worked in Salina. She is in process of establishing a residence in the city. She will be an asset to our city and community. Betty plans to be at the city offices about May 15 for a two week training period prior to Gayles retirement. Three suspects have been arrested by Sevier County Sheriff officers, relating to an incident that occurred Feb. 26, 1991. Suspects were dropping 20 to 30 pound rocks on semi trucks from an overpass south of Richfield on 0. Two of the offenders will be referred to Sixth District Juvenile Court, while the adult was booked into Sevier County Jail and released. The adult was Jared C. Parks, age 19, of Monroe, Utah. Several thousands of dollars in damages was sustained by trucks and Uinbelonging to Wal-Mar- t, tah Freightways allegedly during the incident. |
