Show IQ SunNews. Wednesday. Mav9. 199Q Consumer Information More than a million kids are runaways More than one million youngsters run away from home each year. Any child under the age of 18 who leaves home and stays away at least overnight without the permission of parents or guardian, may be classified as a runaway. The runaway problem is not limited to any one segment of society , age bracket, or national origin. Children may come from any economic background or geographical background. Fortunately, most ninaways usually travel less than 10 miles away from home. Generally they , spend a few days with friends and then return safe and unharmed. However, there are those who travel farther and stay away longer, and the dangers they may face on the streets are related to the length of time they stay away and where they stay. Youngsters who are away from home for several months are far more likely to become a victim of one or more of the following: Helpless victims of criminal activity or sexual exploitation; addicted to alcohol or drugs; ill from the lack of proper nutrition; infected with a sexually transmitted disease; pregnant Some long tern runaways may resort to prostitution, pornography, theft or other forms of crime in an effort to survive on the streets and support themselves. Others may find the no win situation intolerable and attempt or actually commit suicide. There are no cut and dried warning signs that a child may be considering running away from home, but certain inappropriate behaviors may be exhibited. The youth may be: "having difficulty accepting discipline in the home or school setting; "resisting authority and breaking rules on an increasingly regular basis abusing alcohol or drugs sleeping more and withdrawing from personal contact with family members; experiencing abrupt mood swings; repeatedly stuffing school or performing poorly with a marked drop in grades. Although the majority of children who display the warning signs will never actually run away from home, these behaviors indicate that they need help and understanding from caring adults or guidance from professional counselors. you are ripped off by professionals Help available When you go to a doctor, use an electrician, buy a house or financial investment or even have your hair cut, you expect to receive professional, competent service from the people you are dealing with.
