Show r i Mayor's Corner Salina Mayor Nyals Andreason The Mayor, City Council and City Recorder have recently been preparing a proposed budget for the City of Salina for the fiscal year 1990-9- 1. This process entails making estimates of all revenues from all sources and a plan of funds to be available for each department of city government that balances with expected revenues. The tentative budget as amended by the Council is then available for public inspection for a period of 10 days. vile and disgusting ways. Im trying to get the record industry to regulate itself. Its the easiest, cheapest and most reasonable way, Nielson noted. I love music. Good music. I want my family to have good music readily available. As Director of the Bureau of Land Management I am responsible for more than 270 million acres of public lands in the West. These lands are rich with resources important to the American public, including minerals, wildlife habitat, timber, grazing lands and recreational opportunities. But wildfire can cause considprable damage to these resources. The West has been hard hit by wildfire, especially during the last five years of drought conditions.l Drought conditions continue also in other areas. The potential for an active fire season in Utah is very high this year. Pinion Juniper areas that have not burned before are targets for fast moving, high intensity fires. As a partner in fighting wildfire, I encourage everyone to be especially careful on the public lands this year. One careless act with fire can cause millions of dollars in damage and destroy important natural resources. In addition, the increase in residential areas being built next to wildlands raises new threats from wildfire to dwelling and local residents. While some fires are inevitable and some are even helpful, lets not increase the chances of wildfire on the public lands. Take special precautions when you visit public lands this year. PM Editorial Congressman Howard Nielson recently circulated an R rated letter to his Congressional colleagues, complete with a warning that the sample lyrics included in it might be offensive. My intent was to call attention to the amount of filthy music our children are exposed to, and to invite my colleagues to join me in expressing the need for the music industry to develop a uniform system of labeling so parents can be warned what their children are listening to, Congressman Nielson said. We also want a full disclosure of the lyrics to be printed on the jacket, Nielson added. Three popular songs were included in the letter, including I Want Your Sex, by George Michael, performed on Faith with a CBS label; suicide Solution Ozzy Osbourn and Randy RHoads, on Tribute with a CBS label; and Anything Goes, by Guns and Roses performed on Appetite for Destruction by Geffen Records. Dear Editor Recently I learned that many states are now eyeing pensions earned in their state as additional tax sources. It is called a Source Tax. California has become the most aggressive in their pursuit of retirees pensions source tax. No matter what company you worked for in California, they will expect you to pay taxes to California, even if you are living in another state. In some cases you will pay a percentage of tax to both states. The big problem is that you have no voice in the way your tax money is spent in the originating state, nor can you buy a fishing or hunting license as a resident, even if. you are paying the tax. .i "r.try A Carson City, Nevada group, called Resist is worldng to fight this law. It is not just California, but almost 40 other states have the law on their books and are waiting to see how well California does in going into another state and col lecting what they think should be theirs. Nevada has proposed a bill before the Congress and Senate - HR 1227 and SB 434. We have two congressmen on board the bill, Howard Nielsen and Jim Hansen. Wayne Owens does not yet endorse it, nor do the two Senators. I, for one would rather pay the tax in full to the state from which I am receiving the services. If this becomes law, Utah stands to lose a lot of tax revenue. For more information in Utah, call Jack, Provo; in We Ogden, call Nellie would like to get a chapter of Resist going in Utah. There is no time to waste. Taxation in both states is ridiculous. There has to be some uniform rules in this matter. Callus and help fight an injustice that will haunt us through the rest of our retired lives. Maxine Zwadnich. 224-256- 6, 394-130- 1. 1 from detailed and efficient to careless and haphazard. The system has now been strengthened, with records filed alphabetically rather than by school or year. Records of those dropping out of school in the past have been integrated into the rest, but recently the policy has changed so that records of those dropping out are forwarded to Mrs. Williams, who works with these students in the adult ed programs, which she coordinates. Our goal in adult education is to help these students choose among the many options that are still open, and guide them into something that will help them become productive citizens. Part of assessing the needs of adult education students includes evaluating their old transcripts. Current graduation requirements must be met even by those who dropped out of school years ago. Ninth grade credits also counted toward graduation.
