Show 12 The Salina Sun Wednesday, Oct. 10. 1984 Farm p Utah crop Summary Report Thunderstorm activity and lowering temperatures last week essentially stopped the 1984 growing season and halted harvesting operations over much of the state. .Winter wheat seeding was suspended, about 30 percent short of completion, and the third crop alfalfa hay had about 35 percent more to go. Most of the tender vegetables were harvested. Cannery tomatoes suffered severe frost damage in Box Elder County where only about 30 percent were harvested. Moisture laden air pumped into Utah during the first and middle parts of the week and deposited precipitation at 34 of the 41 reporting stations throughout Utah. Accumulations were generally light to moderate except in the mountainous areas in the north where amounts were heavy. 4 The water year has officially ended. Except for Dixie, which was 98 percent of normal, all other divisions were above normal. Thunderstorm activity and lowering temps essentially stopped the 1984 growing season in Utah, and temporarily halted harvesting operations over much of the state. Stockmen are trailing or trucking livestock down from the higher summer ranges rapidly now to avoid the deer season. By the end of the period, 60 percent of the sheep and 15 percent of the cattle were already on home pastures or on winter ranges. Prices in Utah by farmers and ranchers for beef cattle were off 2 percent in September with respect to prices in August. Cows, at $37.20 per cwt., were .60 cents lower than previous month. 1983-198- ATTENTION SENIOR CITIZENS! AFTER THE STORM: Fall sunrises, as well as sunsets, can be breathtaking. Last weeks rains fog, and snow in the mountains, has tempered in northern said Tim Utah, Provan, waterfowl coordinator for the Utah DWR. Although we have a fair number of ducks and geese, very few young were produced. This concern, combined with drought conditions in Canada where most migrating birds in the west are raised, prompted the DWR to take action. At the recommendation of the DWR, the Utah Wildlife Board set opening day back one week from normal, and decreased the bag limit. Waterfowl season (ducks and geese) opens at Citizen News Noon Saturday, October 13. The daily bag limit is five ducks, only two may be redheads or canvasbacks. Conditions reported are as fol- lows: Farmington Bay: Access by boat only; no parking for walk in hunters. Outlook - poor. Ogden Bay: West of main dike is flooded; east OK. More is known about the survival of desert bighorn sheep in Utah now, thanks to an extensive study funded by the BLM. During the last four years an extensive study has been underway in the Red Canyon and White Canyon areas in southeast Utah. The Utah DWR captured and collared desert bighorns for the study. In 1981 and 1982, 24 bighorns were captured and released after receiving collars which transmit electronic signals. Mike King, graduate student of USU followed the movements of the bighorns with monthly airplane flights. King found that the ewes usually return to the same areas for lambing, and that lambs have been born as early as the first week of April, and as late as the last week of June.
