Show 10 The Salma Sun Wednesday, Oct 10, 1984 S "ffT Drugs... What are they and what do they do? Drug use by young people in our society is a serious problem. According to government surveys roughly two thirds of all young Americans try an illicit drug before they finish high school. At least one in every 18 high school seniors smoke marijuana daily. Even though there have been some declines in the use of some drugs, American youngsters still have a high level of drug use - more than teenagers in any other industrialized nation. Coke, Snow, Pot, Grass, H LSD, Angel Dust, Dexies, are normal, everyday terms, known by most school age children. ..and unfortunately, used by many of the same children. At the last meeting of the Sevier County School Board, concern was expressed over the drugs being used in our local schools. It doesnt just happen back East, or in Los Angeles.. .its happening here at home. MARIJUANA A substance that comes from the leaves and flowering tops of the Indian Hemp Plant. The flowers and leaves of the plant are dried, chopped into small pieces and smoked as cigarettes (called Reefers, Joints, Sticks, or in pipes. Also taken orally. Physically, it enters the bloodstream, acts on the brain and nervous system. It acts quickly...in about 15 minutes, and its effects last from 2 to 4 hours. Marijuana can affect mood, thinking behavior and judgement in different ways. In large doses it may cause hallucinations. Studies show that heavy marijuana use may damage lungs, affect sex hormone levels, and strain the heart. It is also dangerous to self and others because of lack of coordination and slower reflexes, especially when driving a car. While marijuana is not physically addicting, it may lead to psychological dependence, retard personality growth and adjustment to adulthood and interrupt education. HEROIN Heroin is a drug that comes from the Opium Poppy. It is classed as a Narcotic. It is a depressant, is generally cooked into a solution, then injected into a vein or the skin, or may be taken orally or inhaled. A few seconds after a shot, face flushes, pupils constrict, and theres a tingling in the abdomen. Later there is a drowsy feeling. Effects usually wear off in 3 to 4 hours. Heroin is addicting, and when hooked, the body requires repeated and larger doses. It leads to loss of judgment, loss of self control, mental deterioration, loss of appe- tite and weight, and physical deterioration. Overdoses can cause death. Withdrawal causes nausea, sweating, chills, watery eyes, running nose, restless tossing. It often leads to crime, as it is an expensive habit.. .addicts usually must resort to crime to support it. COCAINE Cocaine is a white powder made from the leaves of the coca bush. It is one of our oldest anesthetics, and is classed as a Narcotic. It was formerly used as a local anesthetic, but is rarely used today. It can be sniffed, swallowed, injected into veins or smoked in free base form, treated with ether. It deadens the nerves, especially of the musous membranes of the eye, nose and throat, and acts as a stimulant on the central nervous system. Overdoses may cause hallucinations, may affect spinal cord and cause convulsions; sniffing may cause ulcerations in the nasal cavity; depression may cause respiratory failure and death. Physical dependence may not develop, but users can become mentally dependent on its effects. The body may build a tolerence to cocaine. Sensations dont last long..and initial stimulation is often replaced by depression, weakness and restlessness. Danger varies according to dosage, form and method by which it is taken. DELIRIANTS Deliriants include sniffing glue, gasoline, lighter fluid, paint thinner, etc., any chemicals which give off fumes or vapors, and when inhaled produce symptoms similar to intoxication. They are classed as Deliriant-in-hala- nt. Generally they are inhaled from a moistened cloth, or by placing the chemical in a plastic bag or container to concentrate fumes. They may give a feeling of excitement and exhilaration, followed by a loss of coordination, distorted perception, extreme confusion, hallucinations and convulsions may follow. Why do people sniff glue? They dont usually know how dangerous it is, and the materials are easy to come by. The toxic vapors cause physical damage to mind and body. Fumes can cause temporary blindness, and damage to lungs, brain and liver. Inhaling concentrated amounts of aerosol products may cause death. HALLUCINOGENS Hallucinogens include LSD, STP, are usually taken in capsules, tablets, or on sugar cubes or food. They may also be injected. No one seems to know how they really work, but they seem to affect levels of certain chemicals in the brain and change the electrical activity of the brain. They increase pulse and heart rate, increase blood pressure and temperature, cause chills, nausea, confuse and distort sensory DMT, Angel Dust, and THE CLASSIFIEDS ARE A FAMILY AFFAIR They cause the user to experience a variety of moods, sometimes including panic. The hallucinations may last 8 to 12 hours, and may happen again suddenly, without additional drugs. Users may feel strong suicidal urges, and use of LSD may cause permanent genetic damage. Effects of taking acid-- a trip-m- ay recur days, weeks, or months after the initial dose. STIMULANTS They are natural or synthetic drugs which have a strong stimulating action on the central nervous system They bring feeling of alertness', self confidence. Included' are diet pills, cocaine, caffeine, nicotine. They are classed as a Narcotic, Cocaine; Stimulant, Amphetamines, Diet Pills; caffeine and nicotine have no legal classification. Stimulants speed up body functions by stimulating action of central nervous system. They are dangerous because they can drive user to do things beyond his physical limits; cause mental fatigue, dizziness, feeling of fear and confusion; withdrawal can lead to depression and suicidal potential. The body usually builds up tolerance so that larger and larger doses are needed to reach desired results. The heart and circulatory system may be damaged by the over production of adrenalin. DEPRESSANTS They are synthetic drugs which have a depressant action on the central nervous system. The effect is similar to tranquilizers. They slow heart and respiratory rate, lower blood pressure, are a mild depressant on nerves, skeletal muscles and heart muscle, but overdoses often result in slurred speech, staggering, quick temper, and if taken with alcohol, the depressant action of one multiplies the other and the result is confusion, lack of coordination, more chance of death or serious illness. They are both mentally and physically addictive. They can cause organic damage. Withdrawal causes extremely severe discomfort with possible convulsions, and abrupt withdrawal can cause death. Most depressant abusers use drug to avoid tensions and anxieties of daily living, and discover after use that they still have them, plus a hangover from the drug itself. t Depressants are the leading cause of accidental death by poisoning in the U.S. Nearly all of the above are illegal, and their possession (unless prescribed by a physician) is unlawful. Conviction can entail fines up to $5,000 and terms in jail. In most cases for a person over 18 who unlawfully distributes to a person under 21 the fine and imprisonment are double, though laws vary from state to state. QUITE AN ASSORTMENT: Police Officer Charles Woodside, displays some of the paraphernalia utilized by drug users. Most of the items are homemade, and anything from PVC Parents, Kids & Drugs Experts cite a number of reasons for the decline in the use of some illicit drugs by young people. They point, for instance, to the health risks that accompany drug abuse. Young people are beginning to understand those risks and to reject drug use and users within their peer groups. Another positive factor is the growing and significant level of parental awareness and interven- - 4 million tons of coal from 3 Co.'s Although ipps annual fuel requirement will amount to approximately 25 percent of Utahs future coal production, it will only result in about 1,200 more coal miners in the mining counties of Sevier, Carbon and Emery. So say officials of the Intermountain Power Agency, developer of IPP. Four mining companies in the three county area will begin providing about 4 million tons of Producers coal a year for about 25 to 35 years, beginning by late 1985. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, estimates are that additional miners needed for IPP will increase the mining work force of the three counties by less than one half of what it was the second quarter of this year. New mining technology, such as the longwall system, makes less manpower necessary. Longwall involves the use of a large machine that cuts coal across the entire face of a seam, resulting in greater productivity in less time. Garrett, IPP spokeswoman, said the coal contracts have been written so that IPP can buy as little Ann Livestock Salable at auction 661 compared to 978 last week and 476 last year. Average attendance. IPP can purchase the rest of its yearly coal requirement from the spot market, thereby taking advantage of less expensive rates. Garret reports that even if IPP does rely on spot markets, the coal will likely come from local area mines, as IPA and Governor Scott Matheson informally agreed that all IPP coal should come from Utah mines. tion. Parents have begun to realize how important a role they can play in preventing drug use among their based on trust, mutual respect and caring help children develop the personal values and self confidence they need to resist peer pressure to use drugs. One of the most proven and potent ways a parent can help is by group with forming a parent-pee- r the parents of their childrens friends. Parents working together can help each other. They can set rules for their childrens behavior, and be consistent in enforcing them. One of the main reasons kids take drugs is pressure from peers. Parents are learning that if they work together, and if they make the necessary commitment of time and energy, they can have a tremendous impact on drug abuse. children. Parents have to be aware of the early, possible signs of drug abuse, while realizing that some signs may only reflecting a normal teenagers efforts to grow up. With that caution in mind, some warning signals of drug use are: An abrupt change in mood or attitude. A sudden decline in attendance or performance at school. Trouble getting along with family or friends. Ignoring the curfew. Increased borrowing of money. Greater secrecy about actions and possessions. A new group of friends, especially drug users. Parents who believe that their children are abusing drugs should be straightforward in their approach to the problem. They should tell their children they are concerned, and tell them why. They should point out in no uncertain terms that taking drugs is dumb & dangerous, and that it can be very harmful to the childs physical, mental and social well being. To help your child avoid drugs, you need to know something about drugs yourself. As early as 4th grade your children may have some knowledge of the so called drug scene. Much of what they learn will be inaccurate, and most of it will tend to glamorize drugs. Thats wh it is important to set the record straight. Most of all, parents need to give their children support and help them find a way to say NO to drug use. Strong family support and relationships with children that are Dont wait until your children are involved in drugs to sit down and talk with them about this most important issue. Do it now and do it in concert with other parents. Weather NANCY FRAME Current precipitation since October 1, 1984 is .045.
