Show BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah Thursday, August 4, 1977 Jq sqvq Harden products Wheat and Bugged by bugs? Agent has some tips for control by Harold G. Lindsay USU Extension Agent Box Elder County This has been a real bad year for insects. I will give you a few ideas to keep some of those problem insects from getting all your garden produce before you do. Grasshoppers are moving in from dry fields and are getting bigger and bigger appetites. Sevin, Malathion or Diazinon should be used along borders and fences and flowers. Malathion and Sevin can be used on some vegetables. Dont spray beans with Diazinon because there is about a weeks waiting period after spraying before you can eat them. We are finding mites in corn, beans, cukes, melons and strawberries. These insects work on the underside of the leaves and will cause the leaves to look sick and yellow. They are hard to see without a magnifying glass. Kelthane, Malathion and Diazinon are used to try and control this pest. They build up a resistance to insecticides very easily. Those who have apple trees need to be on the lookout for mites. The leaves take on a brown appearance. If you have used Diazinon and still have mites on your apple trees you may have to use Plictran. L. Don Berchtold, 375 North West, carport, Dennis Lund, $500. 756 North Beet Days celebration of our tomatoes have been hit with curly top. This causes the leaves to curl and the plant turns yellow and dies. There is nothing you can do about this problem. It is caused by a virus that was transmitted earlier by the white fly. I have found a lot of corn rootworm damage in sweet corn as well as silage corn this year. The corn stacks fall down or lean badly. When you pull up a stock there are no roots on it. It will be necessary for you to treat the soil when you plant your corn next spring. The adults eat the silk off and you have skips on the ear. We are finding blossom-end-rin tomatoes. This is a condition where the blossom end of the tomato looks like it has started to rot. It was caused by letting the tomato plant get too dry between water turns. Just keep the tomato vines from drying out between irrigations. The new tomatoes will be okay. You gardeners should plan now to exhibit some of your choice vegetables at In my next the county fair, Aug. article I will tell you how to select vegetables for exhibit at the fair. Farmers growing field corn and silage should check their fields for mites. If they are building up so the lower leaves are turning yellow, Id suggest you have your fields sprayed. Leaving Brigham City in early June, with rehearsal schedules long before that, several aspiring drama and music students joined the Dontele Productions at the Jackson Hole Playhouse in Jackson, Wyo. Performing on a basis, the group has been engaged nightly in the Rodgers and Hammersteins musical Oklahoma. Clark Reeder, a senior student at Brigham Young University, as Ali Hakim, the city sliker salesman, has tried his best to outdo Sterling Bennett, a sophomore student attending University of Utah, as he plays the father of Ado Annie. Ronda Bickmore, recently graduated from Box Elder High school, appears as Ado Annie. All have been receiving raves in the local newspaper and from area radio stations for their outstanding performances, the spokesman said. Other students from Brigham are Nannette Perry, now a sophomore at Snow college, who does the role of the but loveable Aunt Eller; Holly McIntosh as the giggling-mindeGertie, and Tracy Merrill as the loveable Ike.
