This Friday and Saturday the last performances win ba presented I urge you to give yourself a treat and attend ooe of these nights. It will bo the best thing you can do for yourself to get the true meaning of Christmas. aggravating, costly One of the expected but nonetheless disquieting traditions of the local Christinas season is the theft of outside lights which Brigham City folks use in such festive displays. Few things can squelch the yule-tid- e spirit quicker than for a home-ownto discover the morning after that thieves have lifted anywhere from a few' to dozens of these colored bulbs. Its not only' aggravating, its expensive. A report reached us this week of such a theft which numbered 40 lights. They came from the fence of Mr. and Mrs. S. Martin Rasmussen, 29 North Second West, which adjoins the community center parking lot. The fence has been ablaze at night, conveying a cheerful message of the season. Folks with occasion to er Margaret Lewis visit the center, we among them, have enjoyed the display. But patience and money run thin at 40 bulbs a whack. And thus the thoughtless act of a thief (or thieves) can spoil the pleasure for many. A visitor from Arizona recently told us that people down there put a lubricant such as Vaseline jelly on the lights. And when they become hot, they become very, very hot. Too hot, in fact, to screw out without suffering a burn. We dont know if the practice works or not. We havent personally tried it to form the basis for a testimonial. But if it should indeed be an effective means of preventing bulb snatching, we would feel little sympathy for those whose activity resulted in burned fingers. NATIONAL 1 Dell Nichols, the father of Brigham Citys basketball program for boys and its director for a lot of years, is leaving die activity this season. While its being left in capable hands, somehow it wont seem the same. Nichols has become as much a fixture of the game as the basketballs and hoops at Box Elder Junior High school. Its been a labor of love as much as anything to him. After awhile conscious recognition that some kind of a problem exists becomes unavoidable. For other parents the realization is joltingly sudden. The problem is evident almost from birth in the case of an extremely hyperactive child. It comes later, perhaps during the school years, in the cases of lesser hyperactivity, hypoactivity or one of the number of other learning disability problems. For many, about one fourth, of the people it is difficulty with spelling. Others have a difficult tine with handwriting. Some have problems remembering right and left. Learning ability varies in all of us and within allot us. The point at which it becomes a major concern is when it interferes with normal activities in the life of a person to the degree that it is disruptive of those activities and it cannot be compensated for by using areas of strengths. The successful education of children with learning disabilities becomes more crucial as living in our society more complex. In days gone by, school for many, not just those for whom school was difficult ended during the elementary sebool year. Reading, language and math skills were nice to have, but did not have the effect on the quality of life as they do today.
