Show I To the extent women seek or gain active participation in activities men may have held traditionally, they may leave undone important functions that men either cannot do or do not do as well as women have done. It would be a senseless and empty victory if in the process of gaining equality, women should destroy the human family or race by leaving undone important and necessary social functions they are by nature of their creation best able to fulfill. Since both men and women were created by the same Creator to fulfill a common destiny that neither can fulfill alone, it simply seems pointless and vain to consider cooperation to both sexes is required to even survive as a race and society, let alone become exalted into positions of prominance and lasting importance. Brigham City, Utah Thursday, August 5, 1976 2 BOX ELDER JOURNAL, ed 1 . Respectfully, Merrill H. Glean, Jr. Disappointod with hospital Editor: After all the fanfare about the improved medical facilities at the new Brigham City hospital, I had high hopes that there would be better medical care for the residents of this area, but I was sadly disappointed Saturday when my daughter noodfcd emergency cut. The requirement was to pay $14 in cash before they would do anything to care for her or even call a doctor when in fact her medical insurance would cover the costs of emergency room treatment. Rather than hassle about it she was taken to an Ogden hospital where she was taken care of immediately. I think it is a sad situation when a person with an emergency illness or accident has to have cash in hand or they wont even have a doctor look at you. The care and concern for the welfare of the patient surely does not come first. I just hope there are never any life or death cases that arrive at the emergency room of the new hospital without the cash to pay in advance or there may not be time to rush to Ogden to save their life. . . In the event of another emergency in my family I would like the hopsital to know that we have medical insurance and if for any reason it does not cover the services rendered our family has never failed to pay a bill yet so please care for them if they dont have cash with them. I hope this will help someone in a similar circumstance and the hospital will revise their policy. Editorially Speaking City should have good animal control program for something better. . A brick building on the same property was later converted to serve as a pound. The means of disposal was less than desirable. At one time, the animals were pushed into a chamber into which exhaust fumes were fed directly. It was not good. Finally, a new system was designed which cooled and filtered the The current criticism of Brigham Citys animal program hopefully wil not lead to a breakdown in relations with the Golden Spike Humane society but a higher level of cooper- , ation. Theres nothing to be gained from perpetuating a situation in which the animal control officer feels harassed by the humane society. And in which the humane society believes animals are not receiving adequate care at the city pound. Both should be interested in the same goal humane treatment and control of dogs and other animals in the community. And each should work harmoniously with the other to " accomplish this end. . Then Brigham City constructed its existing shelter on lower Sixth North. It was then, and continues to be, a fine facility, designed with comfort and convenience as primary considerations. Sr HAS SO OFTEN BEEN EVIDENCED, there is no one more adamant than an animal lover who believes an injustice has been done to a dumb creature unable to defend itself. I think it ironic that Mr. Don Gardner is so concerned over Congressman Howes harassment, as he calls it, (I call it a conviction after having been tried in court), and yet without having lived at the time Joseph Smith was alive and never given a chance by the law or his country, he has labeled him everything under the sun simply from stupid records kept at the time by people hating him and all Mormons. He was finally shot to death for the horrible crime of daring to worship God as he saw fit and supposedly granted to him by the constitution of these United States. An extermination order signed by Governor Boggs of Missouri was issued ' against all Mormons and that was really giving people their constitutional rights. That order was lust taken off the books y.this year, ironically opr countrys Bicentennial. With your attitudes toward Mormons, Mr. Clardner, I would certainly hope I would never have you sit on a case if I were accused, for Im afraid I would be tried and hanged before I could even be brought to trail, simply because I was a Mormon. Its too bad the president of our church is so appalled by immorality that he made the statement that Mr. Howe should consider resigning, if it were true. If more people were concerned over immorality these days, it would be a much better world to live in. N During the age of intense learning and apparent intelligence, our society sometimes seems to engage in counterproductive ventures. One case in point is the current fanfare womens surrounding various aspects of the liberation movement. When detailed consideration of any other species in the animal kingdom is considered, both sexes, male and female, are taken as necessary and important parts of that study. Yet the basic premise of some womens lib propaganda seems to suggest that the human race is composed of two sexes at war with one another race in a vain quest for prominance. Since it is not possible to even have a human race without both sexes, it seems foolish to argue the relative importance of one over the other so far as. status and worth are concerned. Any improvement in the human community must of necessity include close cooperation of both men and women. For this cause a pitched battle between the sexes wastes effort that might otherwise be devoted to more productive and useful efforts of cooperation and progress toward more worthwhile goals. rt s. earnestly does the Carnegie institute believe in heroes that it has established the Carnegie Hero Fund commission. The people of the commission were successful in their search for a hero recently and doled out a check for $1,000 to him when they found him. This in itself is a heroic act now dys, considering the state of the economy. The commissions hero, Raymond Cromar of Murray, was cited for saving the life of Mrs. June R. Murray June 2, 1975 whenjihe blacked out. Her car left the road and plunged into a creek . Sports, always a source of heroes has been much maligned lately The Olympics are a good example of this and I still sense a bit of heroism in the participants, despite because of the money involved in players contracts. The money may be big, but I doubt if money alone could spark the ambition, drive and perseverance required to be a good athlete, particularly at the professional level. The qualities necessary to becoming a professional athlete are those we hold as ideal in becoming anything in our society. The money cant obscure them. Personally, I get a bigger thrill out of amateur sports than I do those of the professional level. Being from Perry, I was overjoyed and relieved that we would finally be rid of all the hazardous traffic. On weekends it sometimes takes 15 minutes to cross the highway; longer than that when it is a holiday. But the joys fastly faded away when an article in the Ogden Standard had a different story. It stated that the section had to wait, because a more important road needed to be completed in Snowville. As if Snowville had to carry so much traffic. The section would be two weeks from completion and could be opened up in the fall, but crews would be pulled off to start the Snowville job so they wouldnt receive a penalty. The Snowville job was to be finished in November. The job was to have been completed in 1968! There could be no better Bicentennial gift to the people than to have this stretch of freeway completed in the fall of 1976 than the spring of 1977. 1 hope the Utah Department of Transporation and Jack Parson realize the importance of the completion of this section. If not I hope all the accidents and tragedies on this old highway rest on their conscience. If Mr. Parson couldnt have handled both jobs he shouldnt have bid on them. The song suggests that gone are the heroes like DiMaggio whose personalities and achievements had such profound influence over the morality of the nation. Some would agree that they are gone, that hero worship is the stuff of childhood and fairy tales and that the ideals they set forth were unrealistic in the first place. The world doesnt operate that way, the critics might say. It may be romanticism on my part but I continue to believe as I did in childhood that these people do exist and still have the influence on us that they always did. When I moved away I felt that I was leaving one of the most peaceful places in the world. Now I am almost ashamed that I felt that way. In recent visits I have talked with family and friends, read articles, and seen for myself the animal abuse which is going on. I cannot believe there is nothing being done about it. Realizing that the intelligence level of people who participate in animal abuse is very low, if they have so little value for the life of an Innocent creature, how much would they respect the well being of you and your children if the opportunity arose? I am not saying this is not a problem everywhere, but in most places the humane society has the authority and the backing to do something about it. . No one has the right to mistreat or destroy an innocent life, and one or two people alone cannot solve the problem. So I am asking ail of you with sincere hearts who know right from wrong to take action and stand up for what is right. . institute. 1022 Thank You Dixie Hansen East 466 South 16! B Salt Lake City |
