Not that the score is that impressive, except the upstart Bears had three scores called back and racked up yardage like Shermans army through Georgia. 0 Ebeneezer Meanwhile, Scrooge was a philanthropist compared to the Bear River defense that begrudged Burley a total of 116 yards. The Bears, meanwhile, were flying high with 325 yard total offense and a bunch of yardage that didnt count on called back scoring plays. Burley, which has won its conference two of the past three years, couldnt get untracked against the Bear defense. The team had only one first down the first half and finished the game with six. Bear River had twice that number. First Quarter The Bears scored in the first and fourth quarters, once on a swing pass to tailback Brad Gibbs who rambled 49 yards for the score and again by Gibbs on a plunge. one-yar- d Brigham North dropped Smithfield North, in 70 C play, but Woods Cross whipped In 70 Brigham City East, 26-- 26-1- 2. B, East blanked Brigham Centerville, 14-- but Smithfield edged Brigham North, 14-Brigham downed North Ogden 28-- in a 70 A contest. Smithfield scored a lone touchdown to defeat Brigham City 0 in an 85 B match, but another Brigham East tripped The 85 A team Riverdale, had a bye. Brigham beat South Ogden in 100 B play and Logan took it from Brigham City 15-- 0 in 100 A action. Brigham nailed Bear in 120 action. Junior Quarterback griddlers open play Brigham City Little League football teams won seven of 10 contests last Saturday. in Don Brad Cutler rifled eight completions for 167 yards. Gibbs touchdown run was set up by a fine drive in the fourth that was aided by catches of 18 and 14 yards by wingback Mark Weese, who also played a fine game at defensive back. Cutler started the game in place of Rick Adams who received a chipped bone in his hip during practice last week and will be lost for at least two more contests, accordng to Petersen. Cutler also kicked both extra points, punted for a average and kicked off. He ran the team well, Petersen said of the junior. Petersen also tabbed tackle 6-- 0 0 Tough on Defense Tackles Jeff Lish, Paul Finn and Marble were also rated outstanding defensively, along with linebackers Dwight Clark and Brian Petersen. The Bears are priming for a 7 p.m. contest in Garland against Preston on Friday. The home fans, sparked by a new booster club, are anxiously waiting for the Bears home opener. Brigham City North will play Pleasant View at Brigham City next Saturday. 70 B East Wins The Brigham City 70 lb. B East team outclassed a Centerville team Saturday at 11:15 p.m. on the Brigham City field to the tune of 14-It was all Brigham City in the first half as they dominated play and moved the ball well. Brigham City struck for two touch downs on long runs. Jim Davis scored the first on a 35 yard quarterback keeper around the left end. The extra point was made by Dolling over the right side with guard K. C. Stevensen, tackle Andy Henchman and end Scott Stevens blowing a big hole. Brigham City scored the next time they got the ball with Nick Justin A 160-pou- 40-ya- rd THE HANDOFF A 70 B halfback from Brigham City gets the call to haul the ball through gaping hole in Smith scampering around right end on a sweep play. Smith moved off of a great block by Matt Yates and simply out ran everyone on the field. It was a 40 yard run. Dolling again scored the extra point on a dive play over the right side using his men up front. An outstanding job of defense was turned in by the East defensive unit as they bottled up the Centerville offensive unit completely and blocked three punts. The only close call came when a Centerville back picked up a Centerville fumble and broke into the clear. However, fast little safety man, Kirk Bemus ran him down from far behind and made a shoe string tackle to halt the threat. This was also Centervilles only first down of the day. Brigham Citys offense couldnt get untracked in the second half until late in the fourth quarter but the defense dominated the play. They were led by great end play by Troy Dunlavey and John Wolf who just wouldnt let Centerville turn the corner. Also turning in fine defensive performances for the winners was center linebacker Gary Wood, tackle Dennis Nelson and tackle Mike Tuft. Next game for the 70 lb. B East team is at Ogden Saturday. BC 70 A North The Brigham City 70 A team got its season off to a good start with a 28-- victory over North Ogden. It was a team victory all the way with each man on the squad making a contribution. On offense, special praise goes to the line which blocked as a team and opened some good holes. The line is composed of Robert McGee, Willie Iverson, Brent Law, Tim Thurston. Tom 0 n 38-ya- . ELDER 70 B North Loses The 70 B North Squad bucked heads with a very good Smith-fiel- d squad last Saturday, losing It was a defensive battle all the way until the last minute of the fourth quarter when Smith-fiel- d scored. The defensive squad attack was led by Mozingo, Crozier, Estitty, Hendricks, Huot, Shannon, Whitehead, Parsons, Simmons, Taylor, Mike Lavery, Carl, Herbert, Richards, Hill and Rooada. The Offensive squad that kept running up against a block wall of Smithfield defense was Bejii, Bywater, Boyd Davis, Landon, Pat Lavery, Miggins, Morgan, Shane Whitehead, Wight, Earl, Mounteer, Jeppesen and Don Davis. Junior QB named BR player of week 1, BOX Brad Cutler directed offense jj. (The most effective defense method ever developed) Thurston, Dan Parkinson, Kent Poelman and Jim Eskelson. The first score came early in the first quarter with Kelly Shiffler going over from the one yard line. Shiffler also made the extra point. On the next play in which BC had the ball David Keller passed to Cory Menlove on a beautifully executed play which covered 53 yards for the TD. The pat was run across by Brian Windley. In the second quarter a TD was scored by Tom Williams on a one yard plunge. Richard Hadley scored the point after. In the 3rd quarter, BC scored again, this time from 23 yards out on a good run by Shiffler. Keller added the point on an end sweep. In the last quarter BC maintained ball control and ran 16 straight plays without giving up the ball. A TD was scored but nullified by a penalty. The defense played superbly and because they dominated play early and set the pattern for the games. Defensive standouts were Law, Poelman, Louie Hicks, Menlove, Dirk and Derek Roundy, Nate Chopplle, Jon Duran, Todd Thompson, Pat Munson and Gregg 85 Bs Defeat The East 85 B's defeated the in a Riverdale Raiders, hard fought match at Riverdale on Saturday afternoon. After receiving the opening kickoff the raiders returned the ball 15 yards to their own 42 yard line. A smashing tackle on first down by Doug Moore caused a Riverdale fumble which was recovered by Brigham's Jess Scivally. The only score of the game came when Brigham took over the ball on Riverdale's 20 yard line following a goal line punt. A Centerville line during Little League football action last . Saturday. The Brigham boys bombed Centerville 14-0- hand-of- f from quarterback Rich Daines to running back Todd Boyd advanced the ball to the 14 yard line on first down. The score came on second down after a pitch out to Dennis Moore who ran the distance with blocking assistance from Scott Evans, Robbie Horn, Brian Williams, Todd Bohman, and Charles Vogt. Defensive honors for the day went to Arthur Heredia, Scott Evans, Damon Eskelson and Jess Scivally. The defensive unit held Riverdale to a total of 20 yards gained on the ground and none in the air. Also contributing to a stong Brigham defense were Steve Bertelsen, Doug Moore, Brett Carter, and Dwight Goodwin. BC lOOBs Win Last Saturday afternoon the Brigham 100 B little league football defeated a defense minded South Ogden team, Although the South Ogden teams offensive team was held in check, by only gaining one first down, they held the local teams offensive unit in check when necessary. Only midway through the second quarter was the locals able to score.
