Instructor Farrell Petersen, here tying a fly, is the center of attraction among his students. The fly tying class is being conducted as a part of the junior highs e program. Notice in the left foreground, a giant fly which is used for teaching. "mini-cours- At Box Elder Junior High school New are not mini-cours- es typical classes Antique cars, backpacking and camping, bicycling, boys and girls hair styles and grooming, fly tying, judo, taxidermy and woodworking for girls. Doesnt sound like a typical class list for junior high school students and it isn't suppose to. e This is the new program at Box Elder Junior High school which is being conducted this fall for the first time. mini-cours- According to Ted Hougaard, organizer of the program, it is being accepted very well by the students. Explore Something Students have a chance to Kim explore something they like. Usually they dont get to choose their own classes, but in this program they do, Hougaard explained. "It broadens their horizons, he commented. Some of the classes are vocational and fun oriented. We have had good cooperation from the townspeople and businessmen," said Hougaard. For example, hair stylists help teach some of the classes. Students get to take minicourse classes one hour a week on Friday. Theyre rotated doesnt miss any so the student of his or her other classes more than once, said Hougaard. Many classes are being taught. They include: archery, badminton, bowling, fun with hand clay ceramics, Christmas crafts and calculator, modge podge. Cooking for boys, creative dance, horsemanship, hor- seshoes, jazz band, jewelry and gift making, jewelry (making with silver), knitting, lifesaving, macrame, merit badge work. Photography, puppets, sex education, shorthand, softball, storytelling, table tennis, tennis, theatrical make-up- , type, writing for fun. Hougaard said the program is still in beginning stages however if everything works out, another will be started in the spring. e Keenan, front and Diane Thorsted, work on project in Cathie Olds class at the junior high ma-cram- school.
