Show 6 ELDER NEWS, Brigham City, Utah Ram pf on Seeks Unify Sunday, March 7, 1971 On Antelope Island Advocates for state and federal development of Antelope island, seemingly running at loggerheads in the past, moved a giant stride toward compromise Friday night on the strength of an appeal from Gov. Calvin Rampton to Golden Spike Empire, Inc. The governor, speaking to GS officers and board members in Ogden, urged that both sides pull back and take an objective look at the issue in an effort to gain unity. His presentation struck a responsive chord and the GS board, headed by Brigham City Mayor Olof Zundel, indicated it agreed with the chief executive. The brief but significant meeting could turn out to be the push that breaks the Antelope island logjam, one that extends back to 1963. Governor Rampton has been an advocate federal of monument status for the island and fellow Democrat Sen. Frank E. Moss has introduced a bill in Congress to effect such a designation. A $12 million bond issue has been proposed to finance this and development at two other state parks. I suppose its not beyond the states capacity but I dont see the prospect now of the bond issue getting through the legislature. They have too many monument. Such an approach would protect state interests while increasing the islands tourist appeal and preservation. It would also bring in federal money to help with road construction and maintenance. Backing Off off and taking another look. I suggest we have dialogue on it for a few weeks and then proceed on a unified plan, the governor stated. He expressed confidence that Senator Moss would cooperate and offered to arrange a meeting between Golden Spike Empire leaders and the senator. State development of the islands north end has been sluggish and disappointing. A connecting roadway with the mainland has continued to wash out and now will require another $70,000 to put back into shape. Already more than $2 million has been spent on the "I'm backing Empire Opposed At the same time, GS Empire leaders recently adopted a resolution opposing this effort. Following the wishes of Davis county, they did not want to lose development of the island as a state park. However, Governor Rampton Friday proposed a dual concept in which both sides could have their way. The state would retain its 2,000-plu- s acres on the north end while the remainder Anticipating a study of local education by the Brigham City are, from left, Mrs. George Seely, Mrs. William Yates and Mrs. other problems, basis of league study.
