Volume 74, Number 10 . , l Brigham Firemen Adjust to Telephone Ring Why dont you give me a ring if you have a fire, This is what the new Brigham City volunteer fire department's emergency telephone alert system all- boils down to. The new system, which sends a steady ring on the firemans home or business telephone, was installed about two weeks - ago. Firemen feel their new alarm will improve the performance of the department, but there are still some wrinkles to be ironed out. This was the opinion among firemen during a recent meeting, according to Fire Chief LaMar Davis. Sets Fire Drill He said there will be a dry run every Wednesday night so firemen will become better acquainted with the operation of the. system. The drill will be at 6:30 p.m. for several weeks. The chief said the system will improve because the departments performance there will be more coverage. Sometimes the siren cant be heard because of wind, sleep, or too much noise, but everyone will be alerted by the steady telephone ring, the chief said. The telephones of 30 firemen are hooked up to a signal device on the desk of the ' Brigham City police dispatcher. When a fire is reported he pushes two switches. The switches ring all 30 telephones. The steady ring should last for about seven seconds in the homes of all volunteers. If the firemen pick up the telephone receiver they will be able to hear where the fire is located. The dispatcher has a talk circuit which is connected to all the telephones. One of the major problems when the system was first used was that everyone answered the steady ring by saying, Hello, the chief said. Do Not Answer The with 30 voices at the same time. The operation will work best if everyone police-dispatch- was-conron- ted just listens, he said. The alarm system will override a personal telephone call, according to Dave Clark, communications consultant with Mountain Bell Telephone. He said if a person is talking to another party on the phone at the time of the alarm, he will hear it. When an ambulance is needed the dispatcher only has to press one switch. This switch is only hooked up to a certain number of telephones of firemen who respond to ambulance calls. Superintendent J.C. Haws said the board must decide whether or not to use bond refunding as a means of financing a new school in McKinley Elementary Tremonton. This method, in effect putting off a payment on the districts existing bond debt, will bring $830,000 which is just about what the new school is expected to cost. The money would become available Jan. 1, 1972 and if this course is selected, Dr. Haws will recommend that an architect be retained right away to begin preparing plans. semi-monthl- 423 y $12,000. It will represent both the city and chamber of commerce. years May Want Inspection In other business, the council said it wanted an inspection of the citys buying procedure in the recreation department. The action was prompted by a discussion about purchases being made out of town and in advance of purchase orders being issued. The city officials authorized Must Decide Soon The board must make its decision soon since the regular bond payment is due next month. To delay will preclude refunding until next year, Dr. Haws pointed out. Bond refunding was utilized most recently in the district to finance new additions to Lincoln and Garland schools and remodeling at Lincoln. That a new school must be constructed to replace the antiquated building now used by McKinley students has long been conceded. Only several months ago, the board negotiated a property exchange to provide a larger site in south Tremonton. Knotty Problem What to do with the school building at Snowville is another knotty problem. The superintendent said there are two alternatives: Remodeling which would extend the schools life 10 years or more at an estimated cost of $15,000. Construction of a new school for which a $125,000 price has been estimated. What is decided for Snowville will have a bearing on the financial course charted by the board. I think the board will have some answers on the swimming pool," the superintendent said, refering to a recent proposal by Brigham City Mayor Olof Zundel to build a new indoor pool here. Youths Gain Appointment bers March 7, 1971 Meets Wednesday Night iuilding f Prospects for growing trees around Brigham City's landfill are not promising, based on soil analyses done by Utah State university. This was disclosed Thursday at the city councils weekly session, during which youths were appointed to several city committees and planning was authorized for another Golden Spike celebration here this sprng. A report from USU, obtained by the shade tree commission, indicated that difficult drainage and a high salt content in some soils at the landfill are not favorable to tree growth. "There is no assurance that the most tolerant trees will survive your worst conditions, the report stated. As a result the council decided to plant several Russian olive trees as a test this year. Brigham City, Utah, 84302, Sunday Morning, j em- - The municipal leader suggested that either the city or school district bond and make a use agreement with the other. Also to be considered by the board Wednesday is proposed disposal of the old Junction school house which is located at Lynn. The building has been leased in recent years but now is sought both by the Utah Division of Fish and Game and Box Elder County Sheriffs department. Bids will be read on three new school buses. A reproduction of the board agenda can be found on Page 2. Enrollment Report The enrollment projection, to be reported by C. Morgan Hawkes, administrator of curriculum indicates a surprising and unsettling student decline within the next five years.
