JEWELRY TROXELL 4 1 South Main Twilight was softly gathering autumn evening. The long stretching shadows had disappeared and the sun was cloaked by the western hills. The harvest moon slowly rose above the Wasatch range to mingle its silvery light with the crimson sky. Summer had ended and winter was near. My anxious father stood gazing in the distance and listened as he set a pail of fresh milk down on the back step. Mother appeared in the open doorway and appetizing odors of her cooking drifted out into the chilled air. It was no small task to cook for a hungry lot of threshers but the spirit of culinary competition ran strong and each woman tried to outdo her the neighbor. Consequently meals for the dusty, hungry lot were almost banquets. Mother had called in a neighbor girl to assist with the carefully prepared supper. But the crew had been expected an hour earlier. I wonder whats keeping them so late, mother said, A worried look shown on her faec as she realized that the meal would be cold and spoiled after all her efforts to prepare it. Our job was the last one on the route and that old machine had been grinding since August. It was now late in November. We had to wait our turn. The hands had all been engaged and paid for earlier since there was no money in ciculation at harvest time. It also was necessary to exchange work. The good board they received and the common hospitality made it an easy matter to get plenty of men. In fact a job on a thresher was coveted and engaged many months ahead. While we were youngsters, we looked forward from one year to the next for the happy event when we might be permitted to push the wheat back in the bins and eat at the second table after all the big men were through. To run around the track made by the horses with the sweep power also was a treat after the machines had gone. So as mother voiced concern over her meal which was growing colder and father enxiously peered into the growing darkness, my youthful heart raced at the thought of the threshers on a late tSijl And, Thank Bjilj crashed Into the cylinder, breaking a concave, a casting that held the cam, and bending a number of cylinder teeth. Were done for now unless theyve got extras in town, the main boss said. Soon the best driving horse was hitched to the buggy and a share holder was on his way. The rest of the men began to straighten and replace the bent teeth. By 11 a. m., the man returned with the news that no extra parts could be had this side of What did that Racine, Wis. mean? It meant that the machine would sit right there until the parts could be shipped from back East.- - And there it sat, stacks half threshed. By L. K. Wood, Mendon, Utah Thone 8G8 It was the day before mas and snow had covered the open stalks and disabled threshing rig when the main boss came to the house and announced he had a gift No better present could be than the needed part which he said had arrived. The machine was soon repaired and snow shoveled off the stacks. The familiar hum echoed across the farm land, making music more joyful to us than any ever played on Christmas chimes. When the last bundle was put through, the idling machine seemed to ring clearer and louder. A Merry Christmas to all and Happy New Year. The novice was not enjoying his first airplane ride, and his experienced companion regarded him with amusement. I say, Bill, whats on your mind? he demanded. I was just thinking about Abraham Lincoln, he replied. Abraham Lincoln? I was thinkihg how Yes, truthfully he spoke when he said a mans legs ought to be just long enough to reach the ground. 10 Christ- LEWS BEAUTY SHOP 5 iv V A V - vf -A - biti.rm. I. I didnt sleep much that night Bright and early I was out inspecting the machine and for my efforts, became covered with enough dust to make me look like a real thresherman. At 7 a. m., breakfast was over and the horses were hitched. The clean w heat began to pour out in the half bushel measure with father, uncle and even a third party carrying bags to the granery on their shoulders. Everything was running very smoothly and we were assured that the grain would be thrshed in good time for winter, even though we were the last ones on the string. Thats them, Belter open the big gate. I eagerly obeyed his command and watched the big red mechanical monster drawn inside with two span of hores. Father designated the way to set and assisted with the horses and the jumbling and tumbling ryds, equalizers and chains. It was all music to me and I felt honored to walk up to the house with the real boss. A fresh tub of warm W'ater was waiting outside and soon it was surrounded by the dusty, hungry crew who were jesting and cutting their pranks. Once inside the house, they all sat around the table in reverent silence while grace was spoken. I was praying in my own heart that ma wouldnt ask me to wait.
