Does your tractor operate as economically as it should? This question is posed by Extension Wayne B. Ringer, agricultural engineer, after participating in tractor tests made by the Agricultural Engineering Department at the Utah State University, Logan. Tests were made using an M and W. hydra-gaug- dynamome- e ter purchased recently by the University. The hydra-gaugdy namometer, Ringer says, is deto show comparative signed horsepower within two percent accuracy. Hooked to the power take-of- f it will test up to horsepower tractors for mechanical conditions and failures of the engine. These include: valves, rings, bearings, ignition, carburetor, and clutch. It also sets deisel pumps. Has Hydraullic Pump The test instrument consists of a hydraulic pump driven through a gear box by a power take-of- f of the tractor. The pressure on the pump is regulated by a large globe valve with a gauge which correlates pounds per square inch into horsepower. This gauge can be removed from the unit and set up by the tractor for making adjustments on the engine. The unit is designed to load the tractor engine and simulate actual conditions of field use. A gasoline flow meter included with the unit is designed to register the gallons per hour used by the tractor engine. The meter is a small portable device and not a part of the instrument panel. It is installed between the carburetor inlet and the gas e American Education Week, Nov. youth, equipped with an amount 9 to 15. of education equal to the local Studies made by the U. S. Carburetor adjustments further brought about a savings of one-hal- f of a gallon of gasoline per hour of use under load. Ringer points out that this savings alone would amount to $160 on a tractor worked one thousand hours.
