Income from savings, investments, pensions or insurance doesnt count as earnings. When you reach 72, you can earn as much as you want and still get your full check each month. Understanding the exsystem isnt easy. Its tricky. Let s detail. more in variables the amine Lets say your monthly social security check is $300. That means in yqu receive $3,600 annually benefits. If you have worked or are working, you may earn up to $3,000 without penalty. Thus, your total income from the two sources would be work-benef- it i r I I i? $6,600. Experience Mr. Now if you should decide to earn the limit then $3,500 be benefits reduced would annual your by $250 to $3,350. Total income: $6,850 for the year. If you should decide to earn $4,000 - $1,000 over the limit your social security benefits for the year would be reduced by $500 to $3,100. Yet your total income from the two sources would be $7,100. If you should decide to earn $5,000, the resulting income from the two sources would be $7,600. If you should earn $6,000, the result would be $8,100. I said its tricky - because no matter how much you earn in the year, you can also receive the social security check for any single month in which you do not earn more than $250 in wages or substantial income. There are other variables, too. In addition, that $3,000 earnings limit for 1977 will be raised next year so that and in succeeding years youll always be able to earn more by working while on social security. Because there are so many variables, I recommend that you visit your social security office and ask about your own particular case. There you can pick up a folder on the subject that might be helpful, too. Its HEW Publication No. (SSA) Heres to you and your success!
