I It would be impossible to know how many ol the 35,000 paid admissions to the 77 Empire of Gems National Gem and Mineral Society Rock show stopped to look carefully at two show cases entered by Richard and Una Golightly of 1632 E. Cherry Lane, East Layton. CERTAINLY, the people examine the items were impressed at the craftsmanship and skill that went into the creation of the many jade, ivory and gold items. The rock and mineral show that was held Aug. 15 through Aug. 21 was one of the largest events of this kind ever held in the U.S. The Golden Spike Gem and Mineral Society sponsored the activity that drew exhibitors from around who paused to stones and carved ivory dogwood flowers with gold nugget centers was beautiful. MR. NIELSON said his oval hooked nig, 36 inches by 60 inches, which won him the prize, is one of the 12 he has made over the last three years. Mr. Nielson is also into macrame and spends early morning and evening hours working on his two hobbies. After seeing the rug, made from white wool yarn with blue, orange and red flowers on a white background, members of the Heritage Center at Clearfield urged Mr. Nielson to enter his hooked rug at the fair. I didn't think Id win-- an old man like me against all those women. MR. NIELSON learned to hook rugs first through the help of his wife Gladys one winter while they were living in Arizona. He had retired from his position as a welder and heat treater at Hill Air Force Base after 23 years. I have heart trouble and a pacemaker so I have to do something quiet, he said. When I get started on either the rugs or macrame, I cant leave it alone. I usually get up early at 5 a.m. because I cant sleep. I work then. HE SAYS HE doesnt make the rugs to sell, but has made seven rugs for his daughters, sons, granddaughter and Some of the hooked rugs for the children were made with designs of ships, tigers and horses. One with an eagle design is used as a wall hanging by his son. It took 120 hours of work to complete the hooked rug with which Mr. Nielson won the sweepstakes at the fair. He began to make the rug for a woman who had seen one like it that he had made for his daughter and granddaughter. That rug had been placed in an Art Fair in Salt New Officer East Layton Joe Schultz became the newest member of the East Layton police force. He will be assigned to patrolman duties. Scrimshaw is an ancient art perfected by men on whaling ships. The men would ornament ivory secured from the whales by engraving a design and scenes and then rubbing ink or pigments into the incised lines. Eskimos incorporated this art into their culture. knik-knak- j v displayed Eskimo carved ivory and jade. It featured an Alaskan jaJe clock with gold nuggets marking the hours. The place for the 12 was an Alaskan gold ram, the 3 was a gold seal, the number 6 was replaced by a gold pelican and a gold walrus stood where the 9 normally is. The jade for the clock back and base was bought from a dealer in Alaska. - ' - , Probert Is Prexy Daniel Probert of Roy has been named president of the Hill Air Force Base Administrative Club for the coming year. One piece was carved by an Eskimo named John Kokduk. A bracelet made of Baleen tells the Alaskan love story from the boy meets girl stage through marriage and establishing a home. One bracelet is made from a light brown Mastodon ivory that looks like a highly polished light brown wood. THE Golightlys became interested in lapidary and rock collecting about six years ago. They belong to the Golden Spike Gem and Mineral Society and to the Tooele Gem and Mineral Society. Hill. ALSO elected were Sheryl vice Porter, Ogden, president; Louise Leake, Ogden, secretary; Irene Sanford, Ogden, treasurer; Robert McKenzie, Bountiful, one-yeDon director; r, Lowder, Ogden, director; Bruce Hampel, Ogdirector; and den, three-yea- r Paul Gilmore, Ogden, four-yea- r director. Membership in the club totals more than 200 civilian managers at Hill AFB. Purpose of the club is to improve ar two-yea- - management techniques at the northern Utah air base and to promote the base in nearby communities, grb Fair. THE WOMAN asked him to make her one like it, but after 120 hours of work, decided that she couldnt afford to buy the rug. Mr. Nielson said hell never make another rug for sale. In addition to the hooked rug in their living room, Mr. Nielson has also made two macrame hangings for their home. He learned to make macrame in the center about a year ago and has since become an expert. He has been asked by the center to teach classes in macrame. HE TAKES THE macrame designs from a book and has sold two hangings to people who have seen his designs and asked him to make them one. I like macrame better than hooking rugs. It isnt so tedious. You can work all day on a rug and cant see what youve done. Mr. Nielson said he has tried to give his wife Gladys lessons in macrame and rug making, but I had to give up. Mrs. Nielson told another story. I know how to make the rugs. We made the first one together, but he wont let me do anything. Mrs. Nielson is interested in ceramics and won a first prize in that division at the Davis County Fair. MR. NIELSON isn't sure what hell do d with the rug now that he has finished it and won, not only a blue ribbon, but the sweepstakes award as well. He says he may enter it in the Utah State Fair or may try to sell it. He is now at work on some macrame wall hangings which take him only about four or five days to make. He has set up a workroom where he sits in the early morning and evening in front of the television set, working on his handwork. VOLUNTEER work at the Heritage Center in Clearfield also occupies Mr. Nielsons time. He serves as chairman of the Friendly Visitor Program an arm of Outreach, and is also chairman of the Intervention program which helps pay utility bills for families in the low income bracket. latch-hooke- Larry Childs Completes AF Course Dn the Clearfield police force before he came to East Lay-OHe has had paramedic and rescue training with the U.S. Air Force.
