Show -- WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL, SEPTEMBER 1. 1977 IS rrx m f By ROSELYN KIRK When schools in Davis Dis- trict opened their doors on Monday morning, the estimated 36,200 students who walked up the steps into those schools expressed a mixture of feeling from dismay that they werent able to sleep in any more to excitement that the year was beginning and would bring new experiences. ALTHOUGH school bells rang 15 minutes earlier for elementary students and 20 minutes earlier for high school and junior high students, few students were late on the first day. Some students like Terry Behunin, grade 12, who arrived by bus at Bountiful High, said he was "looking forward to the year. Terry is in the music involved program including madrigals, concert choir and orchestra. He had worked for a moving and storage company last summer and quit just a week ago in time for school. RICK Hagen, senior Bountiful High, IN SOME cases, it was the mothers who were sad. Tonna Robison said, Stacy, her first grader at Farmington was excited. 1 Elementary, guess its just hard on the mothers to have the children gone all day." She kissed Stacy several times at the door of the first grade class before the child entered the classroom. Diane Petersen, who sent four children to school and still has three at home, stopped in front of Farming-to- n Elementary to say, "We still need another month before school starts to get everything done we planned to do. DAHLENA Goble and Holly new to Bountiful High, admitted they Ferris, sophomores, were nervous. Dahlena said she "was afraid shed get lost looking for her classes. Although high school and junior high students arrived by car, school bus and mo- torcycle most elementary students came with a parent, usually mother. Gaylen third grade, was new to Farmington Elementary. She came with her pencil box and new school clothes, but still stayed close to her mother, Pam. hasnt happend all BUT mothers werent the only ones who dreaded the first day. Maureen Eddington, 11 grade, at Bountiful, said she "felt depressed to be back. I wanted to sleep in. Maureen said she was looking forward to being a ceramic lab assistant. She admitted too that she was looking forward to seeing all her friends again. DANNE Maxfield, who arrived in her drill team uniform, said that the drill team has also been practicing all summer. She was headed for the "Hello" assembly, one of the activities that is planned to introduce the Bountiful High students to the first day of school. in--1. r HEATHER Parkin, first new to the school, but she had another handicap, she had broken her left arm just a week before school started. The teachers tried to make it easier, Miss Evelyn Pearson, first grade teacher at Farmington Elementary had lettered a sign on the door to grade, wasnt her room, "Hi. Whiskers Welcomes You to Grade 2." Miss Pearson said "Whiskers is a comic character in the 'Weekly Reader," a newspaper that goes to elementary school students. I BUT EVEN teachers like Miss Pearson couldnt per suade students like second grader Joshua Herries that it was good to be back. "1 hate school. Id rather be at home' or fishing with my Dad." he said. BUT SOME of the first graders, who will spend a whole day in school for the first time, weren't sure they were ready. Doug McDaniel was reassured by his mother Martha who sat on a small chair and talked to him in the first grade classroom at Farmington Elementary School. Doug had come in Friday to meet his teacher, but said he "was scared that other children he knew wouldnt be in the classroom. Whi-tele- summer. The team began weight training on July 18 and started to practice with their football gear for the first time last week. Rick, who is a defen- Dan Parkhurst, tenth grade transfer from Woods Cross wasnt sure whether he was welcome or not. Dan arrived at Bountiful High to learn the office had no record of him.
