Fasting While large portions of the world struggle with malnutrition and starvation, America is confronted by the increasreverse problem ing obesity. For some the problem is so acute that their health is seriously threatened; when traditional diets fail, where can they turn? ACCORDING to the June issue of Readers Digest, an effective though controversial alternative is fasting. Michael Goodw'in writes: Supporters assert that not eating is easier than eating a tantalizing little and that fasting purifies the body, rests the central nervous system, slows the aging process, saves money and improves sex. On the other hand, tionist Jean Mayer Under the program the fasters spend the first week in the hospital. They then make weekly visits for checkups and to pick up their protein supplement, returning to the hospital for the last several days of the diet. FASTING may be successful in getting weight off, but as many have sadly discovered, keeping it off is quite another matter. Sunset Good And Bad News For Teens The July Readers Digest has some good news and some bad news for teenagers: FIRST, THE good news. Doctors have seen dramatic results after treating acne patients with a combination of vitamin-acid and benzoyl peroxide. You need a prescription for both medications and you should be supervised by a doctor, but a recent study showed that 88 percent of 1,104 patients with moderate to severe acne reported good to excellent results after eight weeks on the medication. Now the bad news. No matter how appealing it is to sun yourself on the beach, no matter how attractive you think the ultraviolet rays of the sun are a deep suntan is responsible for most forms of skin cancer, so look out! DR. EDMUND Klein, a Buffalo, New York dermatologist who has researched skin cancer says, If you must lie in the sun, do it before 10a.m. and after 2 p.m., when ultraviolet rays are at their weakest. Remember, too, that on a cloudy day you can still get 70 to 80 percent of the ultraviolet rays. Protective lotions, he adds, will help block out these rays. Look for one that contains PABA acid and remember to reapply the lotion frequently, especially after you swim. Will Serve On LDS Mission News Kristy Stephens, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen I. It was the United Nations organization which brought the families together. Thirty years ago both Mrs. Burson and Mrs. Van Nugteren sent their names to the UN after learning of a pen pal matching through the UN. Adri and Jean have written to each other for over 30 years. Jean visited the Van Nugterens when they lived in Rotterdam in 1968. After this year the Van Nugterens were able to visit with the Bursons for a week's stay with them. The Van Nugterens were amazed at the standard of living of the average American, especially commenting on the number of vehicles and recreation vehicles parked in every neighborhood. Mr. Van Nugteren is a real estate agent for a book company in Holland. Their return trip took them by bus across the USA to Cheyenne, Omaha, Chicago, Buffalo, Washington, D.C. and New York City where they will take the plane back to Holland. California-Fresn- MARK O.
