This deer brings the number of deer found positive for the disease to six. The sample from the buck killed on the LaSal Mountains near Moab was submitted for lab tests in an early batch. with the Utah Biologists Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) are awaiting the test results for the remaining samples and expect them by early December. According to DWR biologist Leslie McFarlane, the hunter that took the deer has been notified that their deer tested positive for the disease. The general hunting season ended on Oct. 22. iThe first batch of information from sampling we did during the rifle hunt has come in and this is the only deer that has tested positive for CWD so far,i McFarlane said. We expect the rest of the test results back in two to three weeks. The tests are being conducted at Utah State University in Logan. Hunters helped biologists obtain deer tissue samples from deer that they harvested. In all, 3,072 samples were collected on 17 different hunting units from across Utah. Collections were made during the archery, muzzleloader and general rifle hunts. Two deer that were taken during the 2003 archery hunt also tested positive while none of the muzzleloader deer showed evidence of CWD. According to McFarlane, the latest finding brings the total number of deer that tested positive for CWD since the disease was first found in Utah in February 2003 to six. Three of the six deer came from the LaSal Mountain area. Two were killed near Vernal and one was killed near Fountain Green in central Utah. CWD is fatal to deer and elk that contract it. However the World Health Organization maintains that there is no evidence that CWD in members of the deer and elk family is transmitted to humans. Hunters who have submitted a deer for tissue sampling can track die results of their test at the DWR Internet Web site at www.wildhfe.utah govhuntingbi ghameewd. r i |
