Show Wednesday, February 19, 2003 Vernal Express Bruce Taylor, owner of Basin Saw and Cycle, watches Jason Jorgensen sharpen the edge of a Tune up for speed and safety By Virginia Harrington Feature Writer It's midway through the ski and snowboard season and time to check over the equipment to increase safety and add speed and control. Jason Jorgensen is the technician at Basin Saw and Cycle in charge of examining and tuning up ski and snowboard equipment. He said the main thing to look for is rust, dullness and nicks on the edges of skis and snowboards. The edges wont bite in if theyre rusted or not sharp, he s lid. This condition increases fatigue, makes turning more difficult and decreases the fun of being out on the mountain. Jorgensens general tuneup procedure involves taking off as much rust as possible and sharpcreating a level, knife-edg- e ness to the equipment. He also recommends a hot wax on the base to fill the pores. The board is made of layers of plastic squeezed together, he said. This creates pores and the potential for severe drying if wax isnt used often enough or properly. When drying happens, the base may begin to lighten in color. Thats a sure sign that wax is needed, if the base is allowed to become too dry it may have to be ground as much as a sixteenth of an inch to get back to its best condition. Jorgensen said checking the bindings on skis and snowboards should be a routine for every trip. Improperly tightened bindings can waste hours of time on the slopes and can easily cause accidents by coming loose or creating a loss of control. Do a tuneup at the beginning and end of every season to keep the equipment from deteriorating over thfe summer, said Jorgensen. Ski and snowboard equipment is expensive. A little care can keep it in good condition and increase the enjoyment of those sunny afternoons on the slopes. Hurley is a retired Forest Service fisheries biologist who cant seem to get wildlife out of his system. He represents the NWTF as a statewide volunteer in Utah and travels throughout much of the Midwest and West hunting turkeys each year. He was up and ready to release birds by 9 a.m. then jumped back in the truck to travel to Salt Lake with the rest of the load. The nine hens and three jakes were released in Uintah County to help bolster local populations and they should also provide added genetic diversity. While the Basin received only a small portion of the load, more birds are expected to become available as South Dakota continues its trapping efforts.
