YCC members go through a special training to sit on the panel and attend court sessions to see how the justice system works. Those involved said its exciting to be on the panel but also a bit frightening as it carries a heavy responsibility. Evidence that the YCC Youth Court works is the fact that recidivism among those youths brought before YCC is only two percent while in the regular juvenile system recidivism reaches as high as 80 percent. That difference may be due in part to the types of young offenders sent to the Youth Court but surely a large portion of the success belongs to the YCC members and the outstanding example they set for their peers. Member comments Several members commented on why they joined YCC and what benefits they receive from the organization. They expressed the hope that by making public comments they could encourage other teens to become involved. Cassie Gale: I get to help the community and 1 get a lot of experience with council positions. Andrew Tonge: 1 get experience with how politics and government work and I get to help out while doing so. Its fun. Krystal Woods: Its a lot of fun. You understand how the mayor does things. Jessica Perry: You get pulled in by friends. I went with friends and then found I enjoyed the meetings. Some of it is social and some is more service oriented. Kindy Kay: I like being involved with everything. You get leadership experience. You become more observant and recognize problems. Danielle Merket: I like doing the service projects. The funds are there, provided by the city. We gain experience (from the projects) and the money goes back into the city. You learn team work. Jacky Gray, faculty advisor: The community is very supportive. We get support from the City Council, the school district. Connections, the juvenile court system. Workforce Services, DWIA and other local agencies. Allan Mashbum, Vemal City Councilman: We provide the students with an opportunity for responsibility. With that responsibility and the growth in that comes maturity. I see my role as liaison between YCC and the Vemal City Council to expedite some of their needs to help get the job done. We work throughout the year to get kids involved; we reach out for any student who wants to be involved. Its a very positive experience for the students. Its the only avenue I know of where local government can reach out and teach these kids about government processes and community efforts. Whats next The next big event for Youth City Council members is a major leadership institute being held in Logan at Utah State University in connection with the Association of Youth City Councils. This will be the 21st annual leadership institute and will be held March 13 through 15. The city of Vemal pays the expenses, including travel, lodging and meals for the students who attend. In return the city gets back YCC members who are more knowledgeable and who are ready to lead their fellow students. For that reason, members who are seniors, do not attend the institute. Attendees must be juniors or younger so the city receives at least one year of service from the students who attend. The slogan of the institute is Accept the challenge, a call that perks up the ears and grabs the attention of Vernals young leaders and members of the Youth City Council.
