The first two contests were directed by Ida (Jack) Johnson. In 1952, Mrs. Hammond took over and directed the Fourth of July Queen Contest from that year to 1968. She coached the girls daily for a week and sometimes two to prepare them for the contest. According to Mrs. Hammond, the contest was begun to give every girl in Grantsville the opportunity to develop poise and dignity in performing before an . 3 Lb. Can audience. Mrs. Hammond continued to. direct the contest until 1968. Even after she retired from the contest, girls would come to her home for personal help before Homecoming Queen contests and other beauty pageants. Rumors about town have it that the queen contest this year will be different. Different if you have just been attending the contests since 1969. Mrs. Hammond will be guest of honor at the queen contest. The contest will be conducted in the same manner as those from ALLENS and DRIVE-I- N , . RESTAURANT 1950-195- 8.
