Show Mr J THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, SUNDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 17, 1920. Best Time Ev eu Seasoned ar totend Auto Shows Owners GET Get Gootl Tips If Exhibitor Has Opportunity to Go .Fully Into Mechanics of Machine. By RAY MNAMARA. From my experience In attending automobile shows fori the past 35 years, the morning hours are the best time to get a real look at the cars and to discuss and draw comparisons of the several different cars that appeal to you. J From the opening hour, usually 9:30 or 10 a. m., until 2 p. m., the crowd is Just one-fifof what it is going to be from 3 to 5:30 and from 7 to closing time in the evening. It is practically impossible to work your way in and out of the exhibit and you are most certainly handicapped to try the seating position, body appointments and to get a thorough chassis. picture of the cut-oSurface appearance, according to most statisticians, attracts the largest number of buyers. Moet cars are good looking now, so that you must draw conclusions as to which is going to suit your requirements best by a comparison of body appointments and mechanical features, and if you have had very much mechanical trouble with your present car, you are most certainly going to be especially interested in looking over the chassis to determine how your past troubles have been eliminated in the new design If you still feel loyal to the ear you are now driving, or why the design of another make which you may have in mind does not have this same trouble. Some t'se Oil in Clutch ...... . Designed to Ran Dry, The mechanical talks by some of the experienced chassis lecturers are very interesting and educational. On more than one occasion I have heard owners express surprise to learn of some point on the chassis requiring attention which they never knew existed. I recall another incident where a manufacturer changed from a clutch that ran in oil to a dry plate tvpe and while listening in on the chassis lecture some interested owners found that they were still using oil in a design built to run dry. Therefore, whether you are interested or not in a new car, you will learn a lot about how to take better care of your present one, also learn what to sxpect in the way of performance. Interested car owners usually ask how and why a certain result is obtained by certain units In the engine or chassis, after listening to the lecturer's discourse, and It is only fair that these questions be answered by th ut A, " the lecturer in a clear and fair man- ner. , Lubrication Points Should Be Ilandy. , Another important point of interUi how will est in the owner's mind he nave to give this or that device attention. For example, if a clutch ' j America Makes 4,357,381 Cars During Past Year e ut tomobile production in the United States were smashed last year, according to the statistical department of the American Motorists association. There were 4.357384 automobiles and passenger trucks produced in the country during 1928, as compared with 4,301,134 in 1926, when the previous record was made. In 1927 a total of 3.401.328 cars and trucks were produced, a. The accessory division of the presenautomobile shows is just as Interesting as the display of cars in fact, it Is becoming more Interesting from year to year, due to the manner in which the accessory makers are displaying and demonstrating their wares. The accessory division is quite an institution, and this branch of the automotive Industry represents millions of dollars investment. For example. In the various display booths of the oil refiners, the action of engine and gear oils under high atmospheric temperatures is being demonstrated in such a way owners can perceive Just car that what is going on inside the engine, crankcase, transmission and rear axle, and when this Important problem of winter and summer lubrication is brought home to us by actual demonstration, we are going to take the subject matter of the car Instruction book more serious and give these most Important units the attention they deserve as the seasonal changes come and go. Listener Can Get Good Pointer! on Daty of Spark. Likewise, In the case of electrical apparatus, ignition systems, electrical systems, induction coil and spark plug demonstrations are not only interesting but educational. The effect of wide gaps in the spark plugs on cold starting and when pulling on heavy grades is a tendency of engines to miss. This point is usually stressed in the car Instruction book, and I believe the service men living in hilly sections and cold climates. should give this matter more thought than service men in climates where the temperatures do not fall below aero or 5 degrees below. Spark Jumping Demonstration Not Made Under Trie Conditions. The usual demonstration of the strength of ignition coils and electrical apparatus in automobile shows Is misleading In that demonstrations are shown in which the spark is jumping a very wide gap or Jumping the gap when the plug is wet with water or oil. It is misleading for the simple reason that it is no trick for the spark to jump a wide gap in the atmosphere. However, under operating conditions in the engine where low 1.825.581 When Even College Boys Refuse "Used Cars," Then It Is Time to Junk Them; 1,823,581 Quit Highway Every Year. DETROIT m. One of the problems that development of the automotive industry has brought, but one that concerns the Individual rather than the Industry, is the final disposition of the "old hack." When the automobile reaches the stage where "even a college boy will refuse it." it becomes, according to Information assembled from various sections, a problem to its last owner. "Why not junk it." one of the uninitiated suggests. "How?" queries- the owner of the incapacitated vehicle. "Take it to the junkman." "Yep, and he laughs at you." Well, then take it out into the country and leave it there, minus license plates." "No use; within a couple of days, the police department will telephone passed the point' of usefulness and were "taken off the road" in 1927. The figures were arrived at by considering as "scrapped" an cars registered in 1926, but riot reregistered during 1927. Under these- - figures, the averaee life of the average car would be eight years and three months. The under side of a spare tire soon becomes coated with mud and road oil. Unless this is cleaned off occasionally, permanent Injury maj be done to the tread and to the casing. too, if there are any breaks In the tread. In cleaning the car this section of the spare which is exposed to the road is usually overlooked. A good way to remember this is to take off the spare and clean It every tune air is pumped into ,. t it REASONS FOR BALKINESS. Engine Ventilating Becoming Standardised. Another point of special Interest is the crahkease ventilating system, now coming into prominence on most makes of cars. This is merely a means of ventilating- the engine to minimize the amount of moisture accumulating in the engine oil by condensation and minimize the dilution by fuel. Some types of crankcase ventilators require winter and summer adjusting. While chassis, this inspecting the cut-owill give you an idea of how the crankcase ventilating system op erates and how adjustments are made. A shutter is provided in the cap on the oil filter in some designs Instructions calling for operating with the crankcase ventilating shutter open during the cold months and closed during the summer months, the object being to keep the dirt out of the crankcase when the air is full of dust in the summer time and to provide the necesasry ventilation during the winter months. Show Time Is Good Time To Get Desired Information. Show time is a good time trthink of all the things you have wanted to know and ask about your car during the past year. Factory representatives are usually around and available to answer such questions as the owners may have In mina. Therefore, if some local or wayside service station has been stuffing you about what is right and wrong in connection with the performance and operation of your car, this is the time to get the facts by asking questions and listening m carefully on these various educational chassis lectures. Another important, feature about the chassis is the fact that the cylinders, cylinder head, crankcase, chain case, flywheel housing, clutch housing, transmission, starting . ... motor, generator, water circulating system, axle, steering gear and numerous units are cut out in such a manner that you can see what is Inside of them and how they function. Never buy a tire lack without try ing it under your car. It may be the best Jack in the world, but the Important thing is that it folds down low enough to be placed under the axle when a tire la flat, and that it will lift high enough to permit application of a new fully inflated tire. In addition to this, the operation of the handle is Important You should be able to operate the handle of the Jack easily without having to stoop. Long handles are necessary on account of bumper applications, and unless you actually try the jack being purchased for your car there is no certainty that it Is best suited for your car unless you actually try In other words, make certain that the Jack is going to work under your car before you get out on the road with r r- irr nin"n 'tt- FINER Commander at a still lower price iI in' the combustion the eomm-essiochamber has a rating of 90 or 100 pounds, the story is different. In some cases this is accomplished merely by dumping them into low lying lots and permitting the elements to wear them out. In others, however, scrapped automobiles actually have been used to fill up holes.
