Show THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, SUNDAY .MQRNIX(i.T'El)Rr.UiY committee on rules. It is presumed that Senator Watson, as the party leader, will be shifted to this chairmanship. . There will be changes in two important chairmanships m the house, appropriations and military alfairs. - R;. Wood, Represents " Republican. The changes give the middle west, two chairmanships. Apprporiations Body Has Three Chairmen. Ths appropriations committee will have had three chairmen within a year. When the late Martin B. Madden died last spring, his place as chairman was taken by Representa tive Anthony. The latter, however, had been seriously ill in Arizona for a year or more. Mr. Anthony had withdrawn as a candidate for reelection to the house prior to the death ot Mr. Madden. Although it was realized that Mr. Anthony might not be able to take up his duties as chairman, the leaders desired to honor him by electing him to the place. The Kansa&.representattve felt sufficiently well to return to Washing- -' ton at the opening of the present session in December. He- remained for about a month. He was then obliged to return to Arizona in order to safeguard his health. He is not expected to retum before hls term expires on March 4. In the meantime. Representative Wood, the ranking member of the committee, has been acting as chairman. "Fooled hy the hollerin'!" Senator Couzens' selection as chairman of the interstate commerce committee will leave a vacancy in his present post as chairman of the committee on education and labor. Of the other Republicans now on this committee. Senator F. H. Glllett, Republican, Massachusetts, is the only one who does not at present hold a chairmanship. He is at the foot of the list Senator J. H. Metcalf. Republican. Rhode Island, may prefer the education and labor chairmanship to that of the patents committee, or Senator Hiram Bingham. Republican. Connecticut, may desire that instead of --territories and insular possessions. Senator George P. McLean Republican. Connecticut, is the only retiring Republican member of the senate besides Senator Curtis. Formerly Senator McLean was chairman of the banking and currency committee, but he voluntarily gave that up at the beginning of the present session for the less important chairmanship ot the committee on The committee on manufactures. manufactures seldom has occasion to meet. Some years ago. however, when the late Senator Robert M. I a Follette held this chairmanship, he injected life into the committee by obtaining an authorization for an investigation of gasoline prices. He was removed from the chairmanship whenthe Republicans disciplined the four senators who cast their lot with the third party movement in the campaign of 1024. It so happens that the younger La Follette is now fourth in seniority on the manufactures committee. Ahead of him besides Senator McLean are Senator Charles L. McNary. Republican, Oregon, who is chairman of the committee on agriculture and would not want the manufactures chairmanship, and Senator Metcalf, who probably would hold the patents to either prefer committee chairmanship or take the committee education and labor rather than manufactures. If both Senator McNary and Senator Metcalf decline the chairmanship. Senator La Follette is next In line. The regulars may be forced to give him the chairmanship, although they vould prefer to pass him over in favor of Senator A? R. Gould, Republican, Maine, who has ho chairmanship.
