The big problem here is the acid generating soils that will be exposed in the pits and the waste dumps. Once this soil is exposed to air and water, acid generation results. I am eager to give readers a chance to voice their opinion about the controversial proposal. We all need input to make an informed decision on a complicated issue. Summo Corp. is planning to begin an open pit, heap leaching mine in Lower Lisbon Valley. The leaching process is done with a sulfuric acid mist or drip system. The BLM is backing the project for the number of jobs and money it will supply. A total of 143 jobs will be created, many filled by outside contractors and workers not from the Grand and San Juan County area. The project will produce $54 million in payroll over the ten year project. This all sounds real good until you weigh it against the disastrous effects this type of mining produces. The number one reason why local counties should be concerned about the project is the water issue. The project is a massive water user, up to 900 gallons of water per minute will be used in processing and for dust suppression.
