Funeral services were held Dec. 28, 1992 at the LDS Stake Center (Moab Fifth Ward) in Moab. Bishop Randy Day officiated. Interment was in the Grand Valley Cemetery. A j iff V 'A J, ! Butch Christensen, age 92, passed away Thursday, Dec. 24, 1992 in Moab. He has spent the last three years at the Allen Memorial Extended Care who have food flowers. and provided Especially those who drove through a snow storm to attend the funeral services. Dr. & Mrs. Douglas Christensen Marjorie Peacock Mr & Mrs Bob Carroll Mr & Mrs Jim Carroll Center in Moab. He was born Sept. 20, 1900 in Monticello to Christian Lingaa and attended Monticello Schools. He married Marjorie Goodman, March 15, 1920, in Salt Lake City. She passed away April 3, 1930. He later married Leona A. Kerby, Aug. 26, 1936, in Las Vegas, Nev. She passed away April 27, 1990. Butch was a long time businessman, a man of many hats. He drove for Moab Garage, was a cowboy, truckdriver, worked on oil rigs, managed a service station, camp park and cafe; had the first Ford dealership in Moab and retired in 1958, afterwich he traveled and bought a home in Sun City, Arizona, where he and Leona spent the winters. He was a car mechanic, sheep herder, loved fishing, camping and riding in cars. Butch came from a musical family, liked western and classical music; and was known for his pleasant sense of humor. He was a member of the L.D.S. Church and the Rotary Club. He loved to camp with Rotary and cook with his dutch ovens. Butch was also a Moab city councilman in 1957. He loved the outdoors and later in his life loved to garden. His father was an L.D.S. missionary who worked with the Indians and later became the local Sheriff. He has three sons: Dr. Douglas (and Caroline) Christensen, of Blanding, J.L. Jim (and Gwen) Carroll, of Bountiful, and R.D. Bob (and Vee) Car-rolof Monticello; and one l, daughter, Marjorie Pea- cock, of Antioch, Calif. He has one sister, Thelma Farnsworth, of Calif., 15 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildr- - The new LDS chapel almost ready for occupancy. He Nr After a weekend at home, two or three weeks into his radiation treatments, Don and I returned to radiation housing in Salt Lake. Residents change often at the housing, so we were not surprised to find two new-comer- s. Dick and Edna had come the day before. Edna, and small, quiet friendly; Dick, a big, outgoing fellow with a voice to match. We introduced ourselves as did they. We like them immediately. In the weeks to follow they were to become special friends as we learned more about them. Dick had retired from the U.S. Army, and had found other work. Some time later he had a massive heart attack, which his doctor didnt think hed survive. Dick one of was an optimist those upbeat people who looks at the bright side. He determined he was going to whip the heart problem. - Even the doctors were amazed at his rapid recovery. He and Edna decided to make the best use of the time they had together. They They enjoyed them and for four summers spent their time working and volunteering in those places they enjoyed so much. There it was discovered that it was not a heart problem, but a huge tumor in his chest. The doctors ignored that tumor, however, for parts of it had broken off and gone to his brain. He had seven tumors there which they would attempt to treat. A limited number of radialife-flight- ed tion treatments could be given which might slow things down some, but after that there was nothing more could be done. As he told us of this expe- rience I asked Dick what the prognosis was. He said, without any self pity, The doctors give me two days to Harold C. Yancey recently announced the approval of a 19.5 percent average in- crease in Utah workers compensation rates effective January 1, 1993. NCCI (National Council f Com- pensation Insurance), the designated rate service organization, had filed with the department a 24.8 percent increase. Commissioner Yancey has recommended to Governor-elect Leavitt that a task force representing a coalition of business, labor, and the medical community , and others affected by this increase, be organized in 1993 to consider some reforms to address these rising costs. some positive effect in re- ducing rates. Time which he and Edna had used wisely. She was still courageous, still uncomplaining. I hurt for her for the lonely times she will have, but how grateful I am that Don and I had the opportunity to become acquainted with her and Dick. They are great friends, great examples. enjoy life.
