Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday September 24, 1986 Page 20 even though Im still unshod. I was glad that 1 was driving a car instead of walking. I was enroute to Its group tour season down here. They may be in busses, vans, or a caravan of cars but they are always in batches. Mostly young people, on a budget trip, like the Austrailians this morning, who were distressed because the cash register kept adding a few pennies for taxes. Its also time for the Adventure Trail ride in Monument Valley, organized by John and Damon Burden of Wickenburg, Arizona. John was a manager at Gouldings for many years, before Carl Eisemann, who was before the LaFout purchase of the property. Damon leads the ride with Head Wrangler Edward Black of Halchita. John is in charge of the camp and Bill Davis of Mexican Hat is his chief assistant. John needs a bit of help this year. He had a disagreement with a horse just before the trip and is suffering quite a few twinges from a broken collar bone while he provides nourishment and a home away from home for 63 riders. Monticello when that cloudburst hit last week. The fury of the elements is impossible to describe. I was moving about ten miles an hour, feeling my way because I sure couldnt see it. Reminded me of driving in fog back in San Diego when, if you have a passenger, he gets out and leads the car. At the bottom of the hill at Devils canyon, in one lane of the highway the water was too deep to cross but I went through the other side because I was afraid to stop. Muddy water was shooting out from the banks above me in what would have been waterfalls if they had not been coming with such force. Water was a raging torrent in the ditch beside the highway next to me. It probably was on the other side, too, but I couldnt see that far. And I was pleased when I realized that the rug, a melody of coral, rust, orange, and sand glowing darkly lumine- odd sound was not my heart pounding in double time but hail atop my car. Driving back to Mex Hat later I found only the mildest rain slick on the pavement as I neared home but the sky and the cliffs produced a magnificient vista in memory of the black cloud storm. A coral-line- d was the backdrop for the Navsyo scent. At times like that, I ache to record it all somehow. But a camera wont catch that light and the right descriptive words dont exist. All I can do is tuck it all away in my head as another of those very special mental pictures Ive collected in San Juan County.
