Parents will have the opportunity to meet their childrens teachers and hear an explanation of new policies in a panel presentation. New PTSA officers are Janee Palmer, president; Eleanor Laws, vice president; Erlene Lewis, treasurer, and Barbara Harris, secretary. Membership in the PTSA is open to parents, faculty and students. Only those who have a member of the family joining will be eligible for the PTSA scholarship in the spring. Weather The PTSA will sponsor a Teacher of the Month award this year. Students will vote on their choice of outstanding teacher the last day of each month. The PTSA will sponsor an activity bus to the Cortez game on September 26. Students may sign up in the B office. Capacity for the bus is 48. There is a fee. Historical commission The San Juan County Historical Commission held their monthly meeting on September 10 at the library in Blanding. The main topics discussed were the nominations for the national register and new reports which have to be made every three months. The commission also discussed obtaining copies of picture co- llections which are valuable historical data. Time is a big factor for some of these as the collections may be donated to museums or other institutions outside this area. According to a recent survey, the top selling soup in American restaurants is vegetable soup. Anyone with information on this type of collection should pass that information to one of the commis- sion members. The social services employees had an outdoor party last Friday evening at the Dry Wash area. Dennis and Veva Lee Gines, of Salt Lake, were down last weekend. Their son Michael will leave for the mission field, from Blanding Seventh Ward, in October. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Shumway and children, formerly of Oklahoma, are welcome new residents of Blanding. They visited the old mill site there and erjoyed the scenery along the way. The mountains are gorgeous now with the reds, oranges, yellows and browns among the green. There are still a few flowers in bloom on the mountain. Jeannie Johnson and Barbara Palmer recently returned from a trip that tney will long remember. They visited Barbaras daughter, Carol Jean and family, in Denver and then went on to Navoo, Illinois and then to Bayville, New Jersey. Laurel, Jeannies daughter and her husband, Tim Reed, took them to New Haven, Connecticut to see the place where Jeannie and Sylvan worked, many years ago. They also visitied Philadelphia. Ryan Johnson, Jeannies son, and two of his daughters came to Bayville from Virginia to see Jeannie and they took the visitors to Washington, D.C. to see all the sights. Jeannie and Barbara went from there to El Paso, Texas to visit Diana Keith McClellan and children. Diana is Jeannies daughter.
