Show TTTr T Emery County Progress Tuesday, October 10, 1995 7A Wildlife report Furharvester education courses offered- - Prospective trappers, young and adult alike, now have the opportunity to learn the tricks of the trade before investing a lot of time and money in the craft. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is now sponsoring furharvester education courses, similar to the hunter education program offered around the state. Volunteer instructors teach the eight-hofurharvester course, ur which covers ethics, wildlife management, trapping howtos and handling of the catch. Cost of the course is $4 per student. The 1995 Utah legislature passed a law, requiring anyone bom after Dec. 31, 1984, to complete a course in furharvester education prior to being issued a furbearer permit. Those born before that date are exempt from the requirement, but may find the course both educational and entertaining. Anyone, interested in attending a furharvester education course, may call any DWR office for more information. Elk unit in San Juan county closed to hunting-Th- e general season elk hunt opens Oct. 11 within general season elk units around the state. In San Juan County, no elk hunting will be permitted on the east side of US 191 from Lisbon Valley south. The closed area includes West Summit and Eastland areas. This area will remain closed through the 1995 muzzleloader season. Holders of special West Summit, San Juan cow elk tags will be the only permitted elk hunters on that unit this year. The special cow elk season runs from Nov. 18 to Dec. 3. Division of Wildlife Resources biologists hope the closure will protect the San Juan limited entry elk unit. Which was severely impacted last year after almost 50 bulls crossed US Highway 191 and were killed by general season elk hunters. trout." A public meeting is being held to disseminate information about proposed changes to fishing regulations at Lake Powell. It is proposed that chumming with dead anchovies be allowed to increase sport fish harvest of striped bass. Prolific striped bass reproduction allows periodic imbalances between striped bass and their principle forage, threadfin shad. Angler harvest is the only current tool of controlling striped bass numbers. Chumming has been proven to half-tim- increase harvest of striped bass in Lake Mead and Havasu and could be used effectively at Lake Powell. A discussion of the benefits and consequences of this action will be held on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. at the NPS headquarters building on Highway 89 in Page, Ariz. (next to golf course). Wayne Gustaveson will present a slide show on striped bass population development at Lake Powell. He will then discuss the proposed proclamation change and open the meeting to questions and answers on this subject and other related matters. The prettiest baby in Emery County turns 40 Oct. 13th.
