Ward also mentioned his plan to fight off bureaucratic land management. The Republicans have four candidates running for governor of Utah, but one was unable to attend. Richard Eyre was represented at the convention e by Richard Snelgrove. said he has seen many candidates come and go, but this years quality is better than ever. He told the delegates that Eyre was raised in poverty and worked his way through college. He also said that Eyre is prepared to address issues of economic development and education in Emery County. The other three Republican candidates for governor are Mike Leavitt, Mike Stewart and Dove Richards. Leavitt began by saying the next governor will have to create one-ha- lf million new jobs in Utah if we want our children to stay here to work. He also spoke about the hostility between government and land owners, saying the situation needs to change. If elected as governor, Leavitt promises to bring better telecommunications for businesses who choose to come to Utah. He hopes to revitalize rural Utah. Stewart has served on the board of county commissioners in Salt Lake City, and pointed out to the gathering that property taxes have not been raised there in the past six years. He told the delegates he has stood up for Utah. He also said he coined the phrase Not just endangered for values 1A) The Republicans have four candidates running for U.S. Senate: Bob Bennett, Ted Stewart, Joe Cannon and Brent Ward. Bennett began bis speech by saying Utah could eliminate many of its problems by getting rid of Sen. Wayne Owens. He explained that Utah needed to have a common voice on the wilderness issue because in Washington they believe Utah is not united when they hear conflict of opinion. lie said: We need to be free to make our own decisions. The federal government cant do a better job managing our land than we residents can. Joe Cannon stated that not many people understand government and business intrusion barriers, although he does because of his involvement in business. He warned that the threat of governmental intrusion is very strong. He said: We need to take the Wayne Owens of the world and make them understand the real issues. Ted Stewart told the delegates he is a natural resource lawyer and is for rural Utah. I le said he could work with the processes of the ForestService and Congress. However, Stewart said he believed the most important issue today was that of the national debt. He claimed the nation would not survive at the current rate of spending. Brent Ward began by saying he would rebel against debt and congressional pay increases if he is elected. He said he will wage a strong battle against pornography and mailings of obscene magazines. He spoke of his experience in organizing a task force to fight against obscenity and Snel-grov- species, endangered communities. Richards told the gathering he believes he has the best plan to help Utah. He said major problems to be considered are the homeless, the Southeastern Utah fishing outlook Following is the current fishing report for southeastern Utah. Benches Reservoir Restocking will occur in early June. Boulgers Reservoir Fish-m- g success alternates between hot and cold. Baits such as worms, salmon eggs and Powerbait have been catching fish. Restocking will occur in early June. Cleveland Reservoir Fishing has ranged between fair and excellent, depending on the day and the angler. Best baits include worms, Powerbait and salmon eggs. Electric Lake fishermen have had fast real action, using silver Krocodiles or Kastmasters. Lower Fish Fish Creek Creek was stocked with 9,000 catchable brown trout during the third week in May. Fishing success, however, may be dampened by the abundance of natural food in the water. Catch-and-relea- se Huntington Creekfork Fishermen on the left have had good success with Ivastmaster lures or gold Super Vibrax spinners. Joes Valley Boat anglers are doing better than shore fishermen. Some bait fishermen have done well from a stationary boat with floating cheese. Others have had good luck by trolling with pop gear. Success is sporadic. The lake Millers Flat was heavily stocked in mid May. Harvest success ranges from fair to excellent, depend- ing on the day, weather conditions and angler savvy. Powerbait is recommended. Petes Hole Stocking occurred during the third week in May. Potters Ponds Good fishing was had over Memorial Day weekend. Orange Power-ba- it was the most effective fish catcher. The Scofield Reservoir reservoir was stocked with 21,000 catchable rainbow trout just before the opener on needy, the environment and the economy. He said he feels confident that he can lead the state to somewhere great it has never been before. Richards hopes to develop energy sources such as sun, energy and wind. He says he chose to run for governor because he believes the country could use the help. Two candidates for 3rd Congressional District were pre- sent at the convention, Richard Harrington and Par- ley Hellewell.
