April 17, 1990 9A Sterling Scholar competition held (C ontinued from Page 1A) Melissa Grogan, Carbon High, was the winner of the English category, with LeAn-n- e Seely, Emery High, and Kim Hurst, San Juan High, runners up. Melissa is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Grogan. She plans to major in English and become a high school English teacher. She is editor of Carbon Highs newspaper and vice president of the school literary club, Ink and (Juill. She has received national cognition for her writing, including the National Conference of English Achievement Award and a first place hnish in the National Library of Poetry Decathlon Team. She is also involved in debate ompetition, yearbook, FBLA and the academic decathlon team. The winner for the visual ts ai category was Oscar Arvi-zu- , Carbon High, and the runner up was Valerie Holyoak, Grand County High. Oscar is the son of Mr. and Mis. Ismael Arvizu. He has teceived many awards and i , special recogition in art. His talent has gained him acceptance to the Springville Art Show and a letter of special recognition from Congressman Howard C. Nielson in the Congressional Art ComAll-Sta- te petition. Aside from his extensive background in acrylics, water-color- s and other mediums, he has also gathered experience with classes in vocational drafting, graphic design and storybook illustration. Last summer he assisted a childrens summer art class, where he taught the basic fundamentals of drawing. He loves to travel and has had classes in Spanish, French and Russian. Winner of the social science category was Paige Petersen, Carbon High, and runners up were Jason Nelson, Emery High, and Allison Bentley, Grand County High. Paige is the daughter of Michael and Geri Petersen. She has served as senior class president, president of the Carbon High Junior Statesmen Association, chief state justice of Girls State, debate team vice president, or of the school newspaper, girls and league representative press secretary of the Price City Youth Council. Jason Haddock, Carbon High, was winner in the science category, and runners up were Kray Arnold, Emery o High, and Russell Long, High. Jason is the son of Brent and Carroll Haddock. He became interested in science at seven when he received a chemistry set for his birthday. He has gone on to excel in physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology and biology. His three inventions have taken him to the International Science and Engineering Fair, where he took second place and won severed other prestigious awards. He plays varsity soccer, runs cross country and loves the outdoors. He currently is a computer diagnostics technician and repairs computers for a computer Mon-ticell- firm. Kalen Oswald, son of Leon and Trenna Oswald, San Juan County High, was the winner of the foreign language category. Jason Lauman, Carbon High, and Heidi Brownell, Grand County High, were runners up. The winner for speech and drama category was Tamara Harris, San Juan High, daughter of Beverly and James Harris. Kristen Lemmon, East Carbon High, and Sheryl Lake, Emery High, were runners up. The winner for the industrial arts category was Michael Semadeni, son of Oscar and Lila Semadeni, Monticello High. Runners up were Justin Hanson, Carbon High, and Wayne Smith, East Carbon High. Winner in the business edu- cation category was Shannon Guymon, daughter of Gary and the late Sharon Guymon, San Juan High. Runners up were Julie Stilson, Carbon High, and Amy Tuttle, Emerv High. County resident killed in accident A A Ji looo By LAYNE MILLER Staff writer Easter weekend saw a Castle Dale man killed in a roll over in the San Rafael Desert, and the normally sleepy weekend in Price turned into a zoo. John Fitzek, 31, Castle Dale, was killed Saturday night at 10:30 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve. Fitzek was partially ejected from the vehicle, and it rolled onto him. Sergeant Jeff Horrocks said the victim was dead at the scene. Fitzek was not wearing seat belts. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Price Police Chief Aleck Shilaos said the Easter weekend is normally a sleepy one for police officers, but that wasnt the case Saturday night. Price police officers arrested five drivers for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (DUI), and one driver was also charged with assault after allegedly striking the driver of a vehicle he attempted to play bumper cars with. Shilaos said Jose L. Albada, 38, Springville, was arrested when he allegedly lost control of his vehicle at 234 South Carbon Avenue, crashed through a fence and hit a tree.
