DAVIS Progress editor CASTLE DALE A 6-r- sixth inning for Emery helped the Spartans their first region win of the season as they outlasted Union 12-- 8 in conference play last Tuesday. Union threw three pitchers at the Spartans in the game, but Emery hitters seemed to like them all as they compiled 14 hits in scoring a dozen runs. After being shut out by Wasatch the week before, the hits and runs were very satisfying to coach Jim Jones. It was good to see a combination of good hitting and good defense for us. I was very concerned coming into the Union game because of a lack of give offense against Wasatch. There was a lot of pressure on us to win, especially at home and especially after dropping the home game to Wasatch. I think we put everything together for the win, and thats the way well have to continue to play if we want to do well in our conference. Tuesdays game had plenty of offense, and that offense came early. Union scored in the top of the first inning off starter Bobby Fossat who gave up a single to the leadoff man. He then stole second and scored on another single up the middle. Emery countered in the bottom of the inning with two runs. Cody Allred lead off with an infield single, and he advanced to second on another infield single by Mike Gagon. Each runner advanced a base on a balk, and then Lyle Everett drove the two runners in on a single to right. Fossat got out of the top of the second inning with the help ofa double play involving the shortstop, second base combination of Steven Gordon and Duane Pearson, and in the bottom of the inning the Spartans struck for two more runs. With one out, Pearson singled up the middle, and then Rob Wagoner reached base when his sacrifice bunt was bobbled. The two advanced a base on a wild pitch, and Pearson scored on a sacrifice fly by Allred while Wagoner scored on a fielding error. Union went to Behind work in the top of the third. A single, a double and two Emery errors resulted in three more runs for the Cougars, The who tied the game at minimized by damage was another double play which came when Wagoner made a nice running catch in shallow left field and then threw on the fly to first baseman Greg Jewkes to catch a base runner off the bag. Union broke the tie in the fifth by scoring two more runs as Gordon came in to relieve Fossat. Gordon gave up a home run to the leadoff man while the next man got on base on an error. He then scored on a ground out later in the inning as the Cougars held a 4 lead. 4-- 2, 4-- 6-- 4. Sliding in under the tag of the Union first baseman is Emerys Bobby Fossat who joined his teammates in whipping the visiting in Region 7 baseball last week. Gagon got things going for with a walk and then Emery ' Gordon singled. On that same play, Gagon scored when the outfielder bobbled Gordons hit. However, Gordon was thrown out at second as Gagon con- tinued as Emery rebounded in the bottom of the fifth to tie Gordon the game at opened the inning with a 6-- 6. single to left, and he scored when Fossat tripled to left-cente- r. A sacrifice fly by Jewk- es later brought Fossat in to tie the game. In the sixth, Gordon walked a man with one out, and the base runner stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a single to give 7-- 6 scored. . Fossat then drew a walk, and Everett singled to score Fossat, who had stolen second. Jewkes followed with a single, and Gus Childs walked the bases. A single up to load the middle by Pearson brought in Everett and Jewkes as Childs went to second. A sacrifice bunt by Wagoner moved Childs to third and Pearson to second. That brought up Allred, who smashed a ground ball which took a bad hop over the head of the shortstop as the two base runners scored. When the inning came to an end, Emery held a 12-- 7 lead. Union collected three hits, including a triple, in the bottom of the inning, but was able to score just one run as the Spartans took their first league win. Emery now stands at 1 in league play while the overall team record is The region schedule will continue this week with a 3 p.m. game at Carbon on Tuesday.
