However, Emery maintained confidence gained through the win over Richfield as well as its 0 finish in the region and 2 season mark. The Lady Spartans opened with a 5 win but then lost the next two 2 and 1 in one of the best matches of the tournament. While South Sevier went on to play against defending state champion Delta for first place, Emery set its sights on Manti which had lost to Delta after a win against Union. A lot of support surfaced for Emery in the battle for third place as Region 9 teams from Union and Morgan got behind the Emery efforts while Emery cheerleaders, students, parents and other supporters combined to make the Lady Spartans the obvious favorite among the crowd. An opening loss, however, set the team back somewhat as Manti controlled the contest, winning Emery had tied the game at 1 when a Manti spike off a Sheri Lofgreen serve was long, but after that, the match was all Mantis. The two teams exchanged serves six times before the scoring resumed and that came when Emerys Christine Tucker served for a point. Roberta Black then came to the service line and added two more points when she saw one of her serves returned into the net while another dropped in for an ace, giving Emery a 1 lead. Manti broke a scoring drought when an Emery set hit a speaker on the ceiling, but Vickie Lucero served for two Emery points to keep the lead Manti added out of reach at but a single point, Stacy Snow combined Black Roberta and for a beautiful block at the net to give Emery a 3 advantage. The longest scoring streak of the contest for Manti followed as the Templars got two points to but an offside cut the lead to call on Manti put Emery up 10-Manti got that point back soon after, but that was to be the last of the Templar scoring. Julie Freemans fine block gave Emery its next point while a Manti set off the ceiling put the Lady Spartans on top 12-- 6 as Black served for two straight. Cheryl Shermans block, a dink by Freeman, and Mantis failure to return a Wickman serve resulted in the 6 win as the match went to one game each. Fortune shined on Emery for the third match as the Lady Spartans won the coin toss for the serve, and Wickman went wild, serving for 12 straight points on five aces, six Manti miscues, and a dink by Sherman. That remarkable series came to an end on a Manti spike, but a spike by Jones got the serve back for Emery. Freeman then went to work, serving an ace to bring the score to but the serve went back to Manti on a long set by Emery. Three points for Manti followed, breaking the scoreless drought for the Templars, but Emery wasnt about to blow the lead as Jones stepped to the line to score the final two points which came off a spike by Wickman and an ace.
