Show Wednesday, November 9, 1983 5A Emery County Progress Band leader honored by Elizabeth Hanson Rod Rippon, 25, Emery High Symphonic, Jazz and Pep Band teacher and conductor, was awarded Rookie of the Year by f the Utah Music Educators Association at the UEA Conference at Salt Lake City last month. In addition to the honor conferred upon the youthful achiever, the association named the Emery High band as the top 2A band in the state. Judging was based upon tapes of festival performances. Rod arrived at Emery in June, 1982 with a B.A. degree from Weber State fresh in his hand and palpitations over replacing veteran band leader Dennis Bacon. He has discovered that the band is in demand the year around for parades throughout the county on July 24, Fair Days and Peach J n Rod Rippon i , i t Spartan Days. To help them make up their minds, all of Utahs high schools are participating in a Will ar post Thefirst step was program. of their take pictures legs. Each day during lunch the pictures were displayed along with cups in which money was put. Each penny counted as one vote. The final result of this luscious legs contest was announced at the Girls Choice dance. The dance was quite a success, and the highlight was when everyone found out that Howard Williams has the most desirable legs. Todd Thompson with was the first runner-u-p group blossomed and took first place in its division at the colossal Hawaiian event. For the Emery County Pageant, he trained the Nauvoo band. At every home game and at state competition, the pep band charges school spirit. The jazz band, fairly new in the curriculum, is now facing support problems because of the swing back to basics. Rippon misses key players who must practice with the ensemble before or after school. As a trumpet soloist, Rod is in frequent demand. He performed with the Castle Dale Stake Messiah and with ensembles in the area and throughout the state. Familiar with all band instruments and the piano, his speciality lies in the brass. Rod married the former Diana Jensen who holds a degree in elementary education with a minor in music. They met at Weber College and are the Joshua parents of and are expecting a second child soon. The second step was to Farr and Reed Fehlberg the high school orientation Emery Locally, County High School is planning on a Nov. 14 program from 8:30 a.m. to 11 :10 a.m. Organized by the Utah State Office of Education, these an- nual programs feature representatives of the 14 major Utah post high school institutions. Area vocational centers are also included in areas which they serve. Through the project, all seniors will receive, from their school counselors, a Post High School Orientation Booklet which gives detailed information on the 14 institutions, on-si- te five area vocational centers, and private vocationaltechnical schools. The booklet also discusses financial aid and military opportunities which provide educational opportunities for Utah students. The orientation sessions, which take about three hours, are also open to parents. Each student is given the opportunity to meet with representatives of the institutions of his or her choice, find out how to apply for ad- mission, and receive formation on financial aid. in- 4' "fi k 1 k H i -- IT sv iV, I V j; $ f , j 4 lS: S ,1k 1? v 4$ I -- demonstrated by students of Mrs. Powell's second grade class, the computer room at Huntington Elementary now has 30 computers with two host computers making it possible for every student in a given class to have use of one. Installation of 17 new units at Huntington last week completed the computer room. Every class in the school, kindergarten through As sixth grade, is scheduled to use the room once each week. Mr. Norman Dingman, sixth grade teacher, has developed programs and computer menus to facilitate equipment use by all faculty members, making it possible to tailor the program to meet the needs of individual students.
