Davis Progress Editor For the past 12 years, Arlene Madera of Huntington has brightened Christmas for a lot of people. It has become an annual tradition for her to deck the walls of her home as well as the trees, shrubs, and lawn with Christmas paraphernalia which not only increases the traffic along her street, but has resulted in the myth that her home is the place where Santa by lives. Each year I try to do it bigger and better, Arlene said. This year I added more lights and painted Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and their sleigh. Last year I added the nativity scene. Since she first began decorating, she has never been satisfied with what she did and has always looked forward to doing it better the following year. The tradition first began while the Maderas lived in Salt Lake City. When Arlene moved to Huntington over three and a half years ago, she brought her many boxes of Christmas decorations with her as well as a desire to continue to improve her annual rite. The Madera home is easy to find in Huntington since its brightness is second only to the Hunter Plant. A wild guess puts the number of lights used on the outside of the home at close to 4000 which come in a variety of colors and sizes with many flashing on and off. Mr. and Mrs. Claus, their sleigh, and all eight reindeer take up one lawn while another is the site of the nativity. Lights zigzag through the trees and bushes and enclose windows and doorways. When the sun goes down, the lights come on as well as Christmas music which is piped outside by means of outdoor speakers. This results in a steady stream of passerbys, always welcomed by the Maderas, who find the home one of the most seasonal in the area. When it was noted that the Madera home takes a second seat only to Temple Square in Salt Lake when it comes to decorations, Arlene said that it is her goal to get the lights and other items out and on before the annual lighting ceremony on Temple Square takes place. She usually is ready to go by Thanksgiving but never seems to quit adding and changing until the decorations come down. These holiday preparations require a great deal of time, but Arlene said it is what she loves doing most during this time of year. I dont have much time left to bake cookies and things, she said. This takes all my time, but the people love it, especially the kids. Arlenes husband, Frank, says that his wife is hyper and cant sit still for a minute. She has to be doing something every minute or she goes nuts, he woods to Grandmother's house we go!' said. However, Frank has done his share of work in getting the decorations up. An electrician for MK, Frank rewired the home to accommodate the need for power. Once that was done, he said, Arlene did all the rest. have a happy holiday and we wish to share this season with you, with good health and good times. Dr. David Barclay & family To It should be noted that Arlene doesnt spend all her time with Christmas decorations. She is a coal miner at Deer Creek and one of Utahs most successful fishermen, having won top awards for the past three years in big game fishing. She has done much of the remodeling work on their home as well and is continuing to work on making the older home look like new. r. With our warmest wishes for the holidays and our greatest appreciation to you, our customers, we say Merry Christmas and a very Arlene and Frank dont plan on spending the rest of their lives in that home though.
