Baker hit for 21 field goals in the two 6 from games while going the line. Four of those foul shots came when the guard hit on consecutive technical fouls in the Carbon game. Emery faced a much taller team in the Carbon contest. The school from Price was able to control the boards at critical times in the game while Emery fell victim to early foul trouble. Forwards Ryan Young and David Brown were each plagued with foul problems in the game, and the two eventually fouled out early in the second half. However, the outside shooting of Baker and Jeff Thomas as well as the timely scoring of guard Jim Lund kept the Spartans in the game. It was the scoring tandem of Thomas and Baker in the second period which put Emery into the lead at the half Following field goals by Baker and Brown, Emery held a 1 lead with 30 seconds left when Thomas hit from the top of the key, added three free throws, rebounded his own missed foul shot and scored on a jumper at the buzzer to give the Spartans the eight point halftime lead. Davis Progress Editor In a game which Emery would just as soon forget, the Wasatch Wasps came to the Spartan court, dominated four quarters of basketball, and left with a 5 whipping of the local team on Dec. 15. It was the worst loss of the season by Emery which saw its preseason record drop to The tone of the game was set early when Wasatch outscored Emery 6 in the first period as a Spartan club could muster just three field goals through the first eight minutes. On the other end of the court, Wasatch blistered the nets with shots from inside and outside. Emery turned the ball over eight times, eliminating several scoring possibilities, and the Wasps capilalized on several of the turnovers. Although the scoring picked 79-4- 3-- 5. 19-- cold-shooti- up for Emery in the second period, Wasatch also continued to score well, outscoring Emery 6 to go into the locker room at the half holding a 2 lead. At that point, 10 Spartans had scored field goals, but only 21-1- 40-2- starter sophomore Terry Thomas had hit for more than one as he led the team in scoring at the half with four points. Emery also failed to hit from the line, going 0 for 5 in the first half. Thomas was the only bright spot for Emery in the third period as well as he hit for five field goals, most coming from the outside. Evan Wilson was the only other Spartan to score in that quarter as he got four points on two field goals. However, Emery played its best defense in the game, forcing nine Wasp turnovers while holding Wasatch to just 15 points while Emery scored 14 to put the score going into the final quarter at 12 z Z 22 Z 22 desperation basketball in the final eight minutes caused Emery to commit numerous fouls, and Wasatch took advantage of that opportunity by hitting 8 of 10 from the line as well as adding eight field goals to finish with 79 points. Joe Lund scored twice for Emery in the final frame, but the team put just nine points on the board as Wasatch the Spartans 24-- 9 enroute to the 34 point win. Thomas finished with 14 points to lead Emery while four Wasps went into the book with double figure scoring. Also noteworthy was the fact that Emery hit just one of eight foul shot attempts for a 13 percent average while Wasatch was 17 of 29 for 59 percent. Emery also committed 24 fouls compared to just 16 committed by the Wasps.
