The fires, which began at the end of June and were contained near the end of August, burned 95,000 acres, including 40,000 acres of land managed by the Trust Lands Administration. The project began October 9, 2002, and covered approximately 18,000 acres, susceptible to ed Scott Chamberlain, project coordinator and renewable resource specialist for Trust Lands, explained the urgency in this fall. Chamberlain said, Soil stabilization was the main objective of this project. The organic material surrounding the Douglas Firs was consumed by the fires, giving the trees no source for possible and the steep slopes were causing imme- diate soil erosion. The timing of the project was vital. By planting the seed in the late fall, a blanket of snow will protect the seed from the cold; and the melting snow will help the seed sink into the soil. Since most of the soil is arid, this added moisture is a critical element. In addition seed is in extremely limited supply nationwide due to the intense fire year. GPS maps were used to target certain areas with different types of seed as certain blends were selected for areas that receive less water, others for cooler temperatures and more water. The 217,000 pounds of seed were spread by crop dusting planes, fitted with seed spreading mechanisms on the bottom. The entire seed distribution project required 300 trips. To assist in the Trust Lands efforts, two private landing strips near the Book Cliffs were improved with the mens donation of time and machinery from an adjacent landowner and the Grand County Road Department. The Div- Resources also donated employee hours to help with the seed distribution project. ision of Wildlife The School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration is an independent state agency which manages 3.5 million acres of Utah trust lands for the benefit of Utahs schools and other public institutions. nationally. Hucko adds, In addition to their personal work I'll be inviting all class members to take on a small documentary project that creatively records some element of our community Known mostly for his color landscape, fine art B&W prints and as the Art Coach! Hucko has been conducting documentary work for over 15 years. The first documentary work came by living among the Navajo for 10 years. Hucko then went on to produce national award winning books of Navajo from Southwest. The project focuses on the relationship between land and people over time. Five years ago Hucko teamed up with radio producer Jack Loeffler and the Western Folklife Center to create Voices of Youth, a documentary project for high school youth that coaches them in the art of creatively documenting community culture using 35mm B&W photography and audio field recordings.
