White was selected from a field of more than 800 officers across Utah nominated for the honor. 1 had no idea I'd been nominated until I got the phone call, White said Monday. It definitely came as a shock." Details of the event are still being finalized, but White said he is scheduled to arrive in Athens on June 3 for the lighting of the Special Olympics Torch. From there, he will be on one of three teams to carry the Flame of Hope across Europe, arriving in Dublin on June 21. White does not know where his stretch of the torch run will take place because the route has not been finalized. Details will be available in December. It doesnt matter where I carry the torch. Its just such an honor to be chosen, White said. ft?83 'nfltsft? Donnelly, executive director of Special Olympics Utah, said living selected to carry the torch is a very big honor because White was chosen literally from all the officers in the state. Donnelly said White was selected because of his longterm" involvement with Special Olympics, and his devotion to the cause. les been very independent with making things happen," Donnelly said. Hes been very, very dedicated to helping Special Olympics. Steve is an incredible person. For his part, White credits area law enforcement offic1 ers and employees of the Grand County Sheriffs Department for making the countys annual fundraiser so successful. He said he never expected to be honored for his work with Special Olympics. Even without this, the work is one of the things Im most proud of," White said. The time I spend with the kids is one of the best parts of my job. Whites only concern is that the World Games torch run may conflict with Grand Countys annual Law Enforce- ment Torch Run and fundraising activities which include a car wash, and in which officers wait tables in local restaurants to raise money. Im hoping they schedule us for sometime in May, because Id really hate to re- quested the report from the Special Investigations Division of the Government Reform that departments own to follow precedent in deciding what to do with the radioactive ura- nium mill tailings pile located on the banks of the Colorado River 3 miles from Moab. The site contains approximately 12 million tons of radioactive mill tailings and contaminated soil, left over from the now defunct Atlas uranium-or- e processing facility. Congress transferred it to the DOE in Oct. 2000 and directed DOE to develop and implement a remediation plan. The waste is contaminating the groundwater and killing fish at the site, and poses a potential threat to not only Utahns, but millions of downstream users of the Colorado River in Nevada, Arizona and California. Over the past 18 years, DOE has consistently selected e disposal for this type of waste, said Matheson. If the threat posed by a potential flood was serious enough to convince DOE to remove radioactive tailings piles at those 22 sites, why shouldnt the Moab site receive the same level of protection? Mathesons letter to Secretary Abraham strongly urges that the funds be obligated and the necessary planning be undertaken to complete characterization of an alternative storage location and begin the process of removing the uranium tailings from the Moab site." -- off-sit- 5 Tip-a-Co- p, miss it, White said.
