The longer you leave the debris around, the longer many pests have to find a comfortable place to spend the fall and winter. Rototill your garden soil in the fall. Tliis destroys many pests that can overwinter there by bringing them to the surface where they will dry up or freeze. Plant a fall and winter cover crop such as annual ryegrass. A great deal has been learned about why domestic violence victims do some of the things they often do, why they make some of the choices they make, why they come to the prosecutors office and beg himher to dismiss the charges against the jerk who beat the out of them, why they keep uiov ing bac k in w ith the perpetrator and, most exasperating of all to a prosecutor, why they will refuse to testify against the defendant and even take the stand on his behalf at trial. Until we have an understanding of the dynamics at work in these complex relationships and cases we are likely to end up blaming the victim, at least to some extent, for whatever happens to her.
