Most people think deer are only a problem in rural areas, but deer populations are growing in fringe areas like the suburbs because no hunting is allowed there, says A1 Benner of Benners Gardens in New Hope, PA. Deer are attracted to a number of different types of plants, such as hostas, azaleas, most vegetables, many evergreens and other varieties, especially tender buds and new shoots. Because deer are able to jump quite high, many typical fences are not built high enough to prevent deer from entering a yard. Several types of special fencing have been developed to deter deer. One type of deer barrier is a baited electrified fence. This type of system uses bait (often peanut butter) to attract the deer to it. When the deer goes for the bait, it receives a gentle shock and learns not to go near the fence. Two other types are mesh fencing, one made of wire mesh, the other of polypropylene plastic. Wire mesh is attached to posts and constructed quite high, up to eight feet. It can be reinforced with high tensile, coated wire on the top and at three feet for areas with heavy deer pressure, while wire mesh fencing can be reinforced with electrified wire.
