Main, oab- - 250-S- I Bicycles at How do I get to the bar? Cyclists visiting Moab always seem to know how to get around. First, load the bikes on the SLA then put the key in the ignition, and drive three blocks from the hotel to the restaurant. Reverse the process to get back to the hotel. It's hard to fault them for their behavior. Highway 191 (RIP, Main Street is hardly inviting to cyclists, especially since UDOT timed the lights for something like 65 mph. We also have no public transportation, not even a taxi Coyote Shuttles' owner Jesse Marshall is well aware of that last fact. He often gets calls from people who need a ride for a night out something we're supposed to encourage. But his ngs are tied up running shuttles, and long nights of taxiing bar patrons isn't too appealing to someone who's up with the sun to haul cyclists around. So Jesse built a taxi, and he has plans for four more In his dirt dnve-wa- y he welded up the prototype, mating the steel and wood bench to a couple of bicycle w heels. This is no ordinary taxi. At least, not in this . country-- In Asian countries bicycle nckshaws dominate traffic. Labor actions by rickshaw drivers can disrupt entire cities. In Moab, Jesse's plan is bound to cause quite a stir with just a few of these rides for hire. 259-155- I earlv-momin- g The design for the nckshaws is straight out of Jesses imagination. Most rickshaws or pedicabs, as theyre known in the states are tricycles They are cumbersome, often relying on heavy, low end steel parts to take their loads. The Coyote Taxis are actually just trailers, and theyre designed to attach to mountain bikes. A simple hitch connects to a clamp on the seat post, and any bike becomes a nckshaw. Jesse will be renting the trailers out to anyone w ho'd like to spend an evening toting tourists for fares and tips. He envisions mostly mechanics and guides powering the rickshaws, so visitors will get the extra benefit of some good cycling advice along with the ride. The nckshaw s w on't be hard to spot, either. Each one will be equipped with a battery to power lights as well as the and tail lights. The head necessary pimped-ungs will, in Jesses words, chile-pepp- p look like a Mexican taxi. And maybe, with a few of these rigs cruising up and down the boulevard, Moab will feel like a place where it's inviting to hop on a bike or in a trailer to enjoy a pace more appropriate for people who never have far to go. I am drawn to high school sports for the sheer pure nature of the games Kids working to improve and playing for reasons that of semt-pr- o dont include signing bonuses are where the true nature found. I would not be who of I sports can be am today with out a few very distinct moments in my life. The decision to not get knocked on my keester by Shannon Shields in football practice my freshman year at Wasatch was one of those moments. While I did not transform into at that moment (nor has that happened yet. I wonder what went wrong there7) I did learn to stand up and hold my ground. The that success in sports gives those that participate is irreplaceable. I have had the chance to meet some of those folks over at the high school. They seem great. Most high school coaches are great, they get paid so little for the time and energy that they spend with the kids. I have met a tew of the student-athlete- s at the high school. Good kids that work hard, like most high school kids. I was so impressed with the way the kids performed at the state high school wrestling meet last week in Orem. As many of you know. Coach Ron Dolphins' father passed away right at the start of the state tourney and he had to return to Moab for his family (my condolences to the Dolphin family in this time of sorrow). The kids kept a stiff upper lip and worked through the adversity to perform well at the state meet under circumstances. My hat's off He-Ma- n to the wrestling team for their hard work. I look forward to following the exploits of all those high school and recreational sports in this fine corner of the state. And I happened to come along just at the right moment in time. The Devils claimed a piece of the region title, the wrestling team hit the mats at the state meet and spring is just around the corner. So if you happen to see a slightly overweight guy with mussed hair (hats and wind... and yes... its starting to thin a little') a camera and a pen stuck in his shirt, dont mind him.
