Blanding San Juan County officials say theyve been snubbed by SLOC, the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, which two weeks ago unveiled plans to fly the Olympic Torch from Moab to Monument Monticello and Blanding. Commissioner Ty Lewis Valley, said hed like to see a letter sent to SLOC asking for the torch to stop in one or both towns on its way to Salt Lake City for the start of the 2092 Winter Olympics. The Blue Mountain Panorama Escapee still on the lam ... Cortez, Colo. Despite search efforts, a Cortez man remained on the lam Monday, Feb. 5, after escaping from custody at the Montezuma County Courthouse ls.te on Friday, Feb. 2. Charles Christopher Martinez, 19, broke away from a female deputy as he was being escorted from the courtroom following a bail hearing. Martinez is charged with several drug counts and a bond of $50,000 had been set. He fled out the courthouse doors, ditched his jailhouse garb and was last reported seeking regular clothes in a residential neighborhoood. At this point we dont know if he is still in the area," said a sheriff s detective after a weekend of searching. Cortez Journal new legal controversy may be in the offing in an Monticello $18 million lawsuit brought against San Juan County and the health district by former health workers at the Montezuma Creek Clinic. Commissioner Mark Maryboy says he wants to be represented by his own attorney Doug Short, who has represented the health clinic workers. Maryboys request comes due to his conflict with San Juan County Attorney Craig Halls, who issued a gag order against Maryboy for allegedly leaking information to the plaintiffs in the suit. Maryboy says he has a different opinion in the case from the other two commissioners and that the gag order is seeking to violate his freedom of speech. Halls says Maryboy has a fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers not to take the side of those suing the county. San Juan Record s Cortez, Colo. A local group dedicated to overturning the of the Ancients National Monument faces an uphill battle, as planning for the monument is well underway and a director has been approached to manage it. But the Southwest Colorado Landowners Associations efforts to fight the designaton of 164,000 acres as a monument will continue, a member says, although he admits the group may some day be relegated to a watchdog role.
