Awardees for 2004 include: Utah Department of Corrections; Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management; Hill Air Force Base; Bernell Loveridge (lifetime achievement award); Staker Parson Companies; Tesoro; and, Utah Clean Energy. Luckily, replacement switches are equally effective and only take about five minutes to install. Of the 1.7 million plus cars and trucks registered in Utah, over 1 million contain mercury switches. Thats almost a ton of mercury riding around Utahs streets and highways. Just one switch has the potential to pollute a e lake. If the light goes on with the lid partially up, or if you can see that the bulb housing is mounted at an angle to the hood, a mercury switch is probably being used. Generally, domestic cars manufactured before 2001, or import cars made before 1992, are likely to contain mercury switches. The switches are not dangerous when they are being used in a properly maintained vehicle, explained Fairclough. But once a car is sent to the junkyard and deteriorates, the mercury contained in the switches leaks out into the groundwater, polluting our fish and water sup- disrupt an ecosystem, wild land fire danger will increase, add drought to the mix and the fire danger can reach extreme levels. The pile burning is part of the fire mitigation plan the BLM, Utah State Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (FFSL), and the Forest Service have been developing to make Pack Creek more wildfire resistant. Over the course of the last two years the FFSL and BLM have been hand cutting the excess and overgrown fuels and piling the slash for burning at a later time. Now that cooler weather is here the BLM will be burning the piles on the public land bordering the community. FFSL has already cut the excess material in the riparian area and has been conducting pile burns as weather allows. The mitigation efforts within the ranch were made possible by the National Fire1 Plan Grant.
