And they screamed again when drummer Scott Hoffman did a drum solo using flaming sticks. Lead singer Donnie Van Zant admits he's surprised the band has had such success for a monumental number of years. "The average life span of a band is four years," he commented in an interview with The Daily Herald before the show. "God's been good to us." Van Zant, who has never had any music education in his life, started the band with Don Barnes and Larry Junstrom after watching his brother, the late Ronnie Van Zant, who lead the Lynyrd Skynyrd band, practice in the Van Zant living room. "I probably wanted to be like my big brother," the lead singer, 44, admitted. Ronnie Van Zant was later killed in a plane crash. .38 Special took its name from an incident in its early rehearsal years, when while rehearsing in an abandoned warehouse, policemen showed up, thinking drugs were involved. The cops flew through the doors, guns drawn, allegedly telling the band members that their ".38 Specials would do the talk- - By LAURA GOLDEN Assistant Lifestyle Editor The Daily Herald SALT LAKE CITY Twenty-tw- o years later and some things haven't changed for the good ol rock 'n' roil boys in the .38 Special band. But an encore-medle- y of "Back ,To Paradise," "Rough-Housin'"Teacher, Teacher," "Stone-Col- d Believer" and "Like No Other Night," among other songs, gave listeners a glimpse of some of the band's history. "A good song is a good song, no matter what," Van Zant commented. It might be looked at as a southern country-bo- y band,' but that's not the market the .38 Special band members think they appeal to. "We're an American rock n' roll band we appeal to a large spectrum of people," Van Zant observed. And they play to various-size- d audiences. Van Zant said on their current tour, they've played to clubs up to stadismall, 1,500-seums of 90,000. But size doesn't matter, he said. "We're .38 Special and we're going to give you 110 percent. That's just the attitude we've always had." And while not noted as a ballad band, Van Zant said his favorite a balsong is yet to be released lad titled "Rebel To Rebel," which the band played for Salt Lake City fans. Van Zant said the song was written in memory of Ronnie Van Zant, who he described to the audience as "more like a father than a brother." The band's current tour runs through Nov. 5. A new album is expected to be released in February 1997. rr I at ow 14T 1 K IK 1 1 Photo courtesy of Stan BurnsAtlanta Members of .38 Special are: front row, from left, Jeff Carlisi, Donnie Var.
