Show THE DAILY HERALD, Provo, Friday, September 20, 19 PAGEANT: (Continued from Page D2) embraced the runnersup. After the new Miss America addresses the press, she then gets to celebrate with her family and members of her state pageant board in the visitation area upstairs in the convention center. Such visitation is open to all contestants and takes place after each of the preliminary nights as well as the final night. According to credible sources who wish to remain anonymous, the response to Holland's appearance after her crowning was almost as dry as the one she received from the press. Suffice it to say, the applause was on the "courtesy" level. Now, I am the first to admit that this could all be coincidence and it could just be sour grapes on the part of people whose contestant didn't win. But, in my mind, these observations point to a flaw in the pageant on a national level. Instead of doing all they can to find the woman best suited for job of Miss America, pageant officials and producers at the national level . seem to be more concerned about putting on a good show to boost their television ratings. For the final night of tion, a celebrity panel is brought in to judge the Top Ten contestants in order to boost ratings. This year that panel included among others two Olympic athletes, a soap opera star, an Air Force pilot and an author. These judges spend less than 24 hours getting to know the Top Ten. While they may be experts in their indiv idual fields, they don't have enough time to really indentify the woman who has the best qualities to be Miss America. The people who do have enough time are the seven people w ho judge the preliminary competitions and select the Top Ten. Their credentials usually lie in the music or performance fields and they have interviewed each of the contestants as well as seeing them perform three nights in a row. Miss America national officials should stop worrying about the ratings and focus more on making sure the right people are in place to pick a woman who truly reflects what women in the 1990s are all about.
