From Daily Herald Staff and Wire Reports ; The following are brief reviews of movies, rated on a system of: 4 stars: outstanding; 3 stars: worthy 1 effort; 2 stars: so-sstar a bomb. THE CABLE GUY, 2 stars: "The Cable Guy" is by turns, hilarious and horrifying, a sort of "Psycho" filtered through the lens of a joker. This dark comedy by Jim Carrey shows the rubber-face- d comedian is capable of being one mean For Carrey fans only. Rated PG-1: THE CRAFT, 1 12 stars: "The Craft" is a craftless creation that starts out with a teenage tale of p in a revenge and goes carnage of pointless violence. Rated, R; violence. 2 stars: ; DRAGONHEART, d in "Ipragonheart" is more ways than one with its tired story which gets a bit of a lift from Sean Connery as an aging dragon wbrried about his soul. Rated PG-1- Hunchback of Notre Dame" by Disney is a triumph in story, animation, music and voices. This lovingly crafted version of Victor Hugo's misshapen Notre Dame Cathedral bell ringer shows the most daring adult fare ever offered in an animated feature. Rated G; but some scenes might be scary for small children. INDEPENDENCE DAY, 4 stars: "Independence Day" is a thrilling, exciting, action-packe- d fantasy about an alien invasion and the ordinary people who do extraordinary things to save the world. This has all the chills and spills one could want in an adventure film. Rated PG-1MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, 3 stars: Tom Cruise and company kick off the first of the big summer films with a worthwhile action picture featuring many of the elements that made the original series so enjoyable. Faring best are the elaborate missions and action sequences. Disappointing is the often predictable plot and occasional credibility gap. Rated PG-1- ; I o; 3. half-hearte- 3. ERASER, 2 stars: Erase your brain, and you'll find Eraser a typvehicle ical Schwarzenegger where murder and mayhem triumph over plot and performance. Rated R. : HOMEWARD BOUND II: LDST IN SAN FRANCISCO, 3 stars: Wholesome, humorous and carrying a meaningful agenda, this sequel mirrors the first as Chance, Shadow and Sassy watch out for one another on their road trip back home. Kids will eat it up, while parents should find it pleasantly painless. Rated G. HUNCHBACK THE Dreyfuss' portrayal of a would-b- e cmposer who settles for teaching high school music elevates a predictable plot inot a superb movie. Rated PG. Mostly good, clean fun as a plain jane radio host substitutes her knockout neighbor when an interested suiter conies calling. Soon, all is confusion as he is forced to sort out the truth about love, beauty and animal husbandry. Janeane Garofalo, Uma Thurmin and Ben Chaplin make up the talented and : funny cast.
