Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Guangxi and Guizhou. Flooding also was reported in Shandong in the northeast. Official figures say 10 million people have been affected but do not specify whether they suffered injuries or property damage or were inconvenienced by canceled transportation. Rains in south China were expected to subside within the next few days as the storm moved north, the China Daily said. Li Jiansheng of the National Flood Control Command warned that while the Yangtze and other rivers were flowing at normal levels, they could rise if rains continue, the Xinhua News Agency reported. Flooding strikes every summer in south China, where centuries of intensive farming has stripped away vegetation and damaged soils needed to catch rain, and where flood-contrsystems are poorly maintained. Zhe-jian- I BEIJING Worsening summer floods across south China have killed at least 237 people, stranded 1 million others and destroyed 3.2 million acres of farmland, the government said today. ' evacuated have Soldiers 560,000 people from hundreds of villages, the Civil Affairs Ministry announced. The highest death toll was in the southwestern province of Guizhou, one of China's poorest areas, where 136 people were reported killed, many of them by landslides. One landslide hit the train station in the provincial capital, Guiyang. I Damage is reported at $1.2 bil-lifrom seasonal storms that have dumped up to 22 inches of ram on nine provinces along the Yangtze River since last weekend. The floods have destroyed thousands of homes and covered millions of acres of farmland. Thousands of factories and businesses had been forced to close, according to news reports. ol It was in July of ' 197 1 when Tom Barbcri first set foot in KALL 910's studio.
