Show COUGARMJM!? afoul of the Honor Code? MB: We feel badly about those stories. It hurts the young people. They are held up for making a mistake in public. We would like the young person to be able to work through the problem in private. Our second concern is we hope our young people really are representative of the university. That's what we want them to be. It doesn't cast the light on us we'd like to have, but that's secondary to what's happening with the young person. You know, every young person makes mistakes. Frankly, one of the major challenges we have today is that the Internet Ss so powerful that it's not long after a mistake is made by a young person that it's known around the world. There's little time to sort through choices and options and what needs to be done. CN: You have made the statement that you want the Mountain West Conference to be a "presi- dents' conference." MB: One of the things that maybe have given me more visibility in athletics is the creation of the Mountain West Conference. The presidents' interest in the Mountain West is not just athletics, but academics. If it can be naturally done, not forced, where they can be linkages between athletics and academics, we'd like to see that happen. The creation of the Mountain West Conference and the declaration that we'd like it to be a presidents' conference, that heightened the role the presidents have taken. That's why it may appear I'm more involved. But key strategic decisions are not initiated by me. CN: A lot of fans and boosters are frightened by the idea of a "presidents' conference" because it was the university presidents who gave us the WAC, without consulting their athletic directors. Do you fear the potential for a similar mistake by the Mountain West presidents? MB: I think we're working veryclosely with our athletic directors. This: is not going to be a presidents' conference in terms of our making major athletic decisions. We're trying to provide a framework in which athletics as a whole fits correctly in what we're trying to do. We also want to make sure the way in which athletics operates within the institution is consistent with our goals. This is an NCAA issue. Five, six, seven years ago, the NCAA was restructured so the board at the top is comprised of 15 university presidents who are concerned about athletics moving in a direction not consistent with the mission of a university University presidents in Continued on Page 7.
