Show THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Thursday, November Page G10 Movie 22, 1990 season witttayfl By BOB THOMAS Associated Press Writer The film LOS ANGELES (AP) crowd expects "The Godfather III" d to climax a year in a holiday season without the usual and possible glut of Academy Award movies. Francis Ford Coppola's continuation of the bloody Corleone saga arrives on Christmas Day, giving it onlylone week to augment the 1990 bovoffice total. 'If 'Godfather IIP had been released on Nov. 21 as scheduled, it might have contributed to another record year," says Daily Variety's Art Murphy. "Barring a miracle, the year's total will be $4.9 billion, only $100 million behind 1989's record. The spring was sensational, The with three $100 million-film- s. summer was the second-beever, and so was the fall. It has been a - near-recor- big-budg- st good year." This holiday season will bring only 12 films in wide release, compared to 5 in the early 1980s. About 10 others will receive limited releases to enhance their prestige and Oscar chances. Some of the movies will remain in the market20-2- place through New Year's. "Dances With Wolves" will certainly be among them. Other possibili ties: "Rocky V," "The Rescuers Down Under," "Three Men and a Little Lady," "Predator H." Here are the attractions seeking big audiences in December: "Kindergarten Cop" features Arnold Schwarzenegger returning with his "Twins" director Ivan Reitman in a comedy with kids and action. "The Bonfire of the Vanities" stars Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffth and Bruce Willis in Tom Wolfe's novel of urban corruption, directed by Brian DePalma ("The Untouch- ables"). "Awakenings" is another change of pace for Robin Williams, based on a real-lif- e story of a doctor who revives catatonic patients. With Robert De Niro and directed by Penny Marshall ("Big"). "Misery" has Rob Reiner ("When Harry Met Sally...") turning serious with a Stephen King novel, starring James Caan and Kathy Bates. "Mermaids" represents Cher's return to films after the g "Moonstruck." With Winona Ryder and Bob Hoskins. "Look Who's Talking Too" is a reprise of last year's hit, with Roseanne Barr joining Bruce Willis as a baby's voice. Oscar-winnin- psyaD "The Rookie" features Clint Eastwood returning to the police force after bombing as "White Hunter, Black Heart." "Almost an Angel" teams Paul Hogan and new wife Linda a comedy unrelated to the '"Crocodile'Dundee" films that introduced them. Here are other films that will have less impact on the 1990 total because of limited releases, but will be heard from in 1991: Kozlowski in "Havana" m reunites Robert Redford and Sydney Pollack ("Out of Africa") for a love story against the backdrop of the Cuban revolution. "Russia House" stars Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer in the John le Carre spy thriller. offers the American film debut of Gerard Depardieu as a French immigrant "Green Card" in a marriage of convenience with Andie McDowall ("sex, lies and videotape"). Scissorshands" is another fantasy from Tim Burton "tdward ("Batman," "Beetlejuice"). "Alice" has Woody Allen writing and directing but not acting. William Hurt, Mia Farrow and Alec Baldwin do perform. "The Sheltering Sky" is a love story by Berardo Bertolucci ("The Last Emperor") with Debra Winger and John Malkovich. "Hamlet" stars the commercially viable Mel Gibson and Glenn Close, directed by Franco Zeffirel-l- i. "Come See the Paradise" is an interracial romance during the wartime internment of Japanese-American- s. "Mr. and Mrs. Bridge" stars Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward as an aging Kansas City couple. "Mr. Johnson" features Pierce Brosnan in an African political story directed by Bruce Berensford ("Driving Miss Daisy"). Even with a lesser number of films in wide release, that's a carload of movies to be considered by audiences, critics and, importantly, Academy voters. But the el Barber's Overture to "The School for Scandal," and Richard Strauss' Don Quixote. Kirshbaum has established him-sejthroughout the world as a brilliant cellist. In addition, he holds master classes at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Robert Schumann's Cello Concerto will be perforated by Kirsh- baum. This concerto was written during a very happy period in Schumann's lfie towards the end of his career. The work is considered to have a very rich language with subtle emotional expression. The es legendary cellist Pablo Casals called it "one of the finest works one could wish to hear sublime music from the beginning to end." The audience will note, that although there are three movements, the orchestra will play without pause. Schumann wrote the concerto in this way because he abhorred clapping between movements because he felt the applause interrupted the mood he was trying to create. The concert will open with Barber's Overture to "The School for Scandal." This work was Barber's graduation thesis from the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. As a well-rea- d literary enthusiast, Barber was inspired by Shelly's comedy play. The composition was not written to be performed for production of the play. Barber Sa-mu- al In addition to performing with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, he is active in chamber music as a member of the Meridian String Quartet and founder of the Sindarin Quartet. Keeping in theme with literature inspired music, the orchestra will perform Richard Strauss' Don Quixote. This tone poem depicts the historically romantic adventures of Don Quixote and his faithful squire Sancho Panza as found in Cervantes' novel. The cello solo, to be performed by Kirshbaum, characterizes the dramatic adventures of the hero Don Quixote. Sancho Panza is more frequently represented by the viola, played by Utah Symphony principal violist Christopher McKellar, with intermittent parts played by the tuba and bass clarinet. The work portrays ten exploits of these adventures from the beginning of their journey to the death of Don Quixote. Christopher McKellar has been with the Utah Symphony since 1966 except for serving as principal violist for the Spokane Symphony between 1970 and 1973. He returned to this orchestra as principal violist in 1974 and has performed with the orchestra in this capacity since then. McKellar has a degree in viola performance from the University of Utah.
